DVD rip help

Hi,
I’m new to the DVD ripping arena and have a few questions. I would like to be able to capture audio tracks (clips?) off of commercial movie DVDs and save them as wav or mp3 files for later CD burning. Quite often the track I’m interested in isn’t available anywhere or isn’t included on the movie CD score.
1 - is this possible?
2 - do I need a DVD player only or a DVD burner?
3- what else would I need and what software is best for this?

Thanks for any help.
Steve
