Hi,
well today I got a Samsung SH-S203B thanks to CDF poll and since I didnt have enough blank DVD-R and my computer is full, I wanted to buy Verbatim DVD-R ( I choose -R especially ). I saw Made In Japan text on 50 pcs orange ( bleh new color ) cakebox and thought its better than MIT or MII. but now while checking forums here, I noticed everyone, without exception ?, says MIT is better in DVD media. Now I’m confused about this…

I already bought a dvd-rw while I wanted a dvd-rom because I really liked my pioneer 106s, it read everything without problem until it died. Now it cant read anything. I thought its because of WinXP and tried on Ubuntu, it just saw the disc but when I started to copy files from dvd to hdd, it said it will take more than 1 hour, I waited for a while and noticed that timer was right, it was not just because of file count.

Also, my nec nd 3550a writer doesnt read any DVD-R. I tried many things, 1.07 firmare, making it slave, uninstalling ide controllers, deleting upper/lower xxxx registries, clean winxp install ( on part C:, all other hdd partitions are untouched, I say this though I dont believe it can be a problem ), after clean winxp install without installing anything new like nero etc. I tried my nec and still it couldnt read anything. yesterday I read so many things here and in other sites but nothing helped so I gave up on nec’s dvd-r reading. I’ll use it to burn dvds and samsung to read them.

anyway, so while I’m upset I went and bought those. I came home thinking that I’m lucky I found TYG03 but with all posts here now I’m upset and confused again. I burned a disc on nec at 4X like before ( I always burn at 4X, I want my backups to be safe and to be well read by everything ) and read on new samsung and opened Nero 6.6.0.14 to test the disc. here are the results;

when I try to start DiscQuality it says initializing error, I have no idea what it is. when I scan disc it says %100 good

and then I tried benchmark

first picture is edited because it was in my native language.

these benchmark results are from the same disc. I started the operation and got the screenshot then I noticed I’ll post this on internet and changed language and the started the operation again and got this.

I tried these at 8X speed and

the funny thing is when I tried the same disc while its blank I got two or three big downs, so I thought “oh %&#$”. I started to write somethings and while verifying the disc I saw errors… at %56 I stopped it because it was on %56 for a long time. then I put it on samsung and started these tests.

I’m confused now. what do you say about this ? I opened the box so there is no turning back now but should I search for MIT next time ?

oh btw batch code is GH000192 so they are not fake I suppose.

8X TY +/-R are better. For 16X +/-R, I prefer Verbatim over TY.

well if I could find 8X I would prefer those too but they dont sell them here anymore. so I bought Verbatim 16X DVD-R ( TYG03 MIJ )

Keep looking.

Your TYG03 (even Verbatim branded) should do fine on your Samsung. Update the firmware to SB03.

For the Samsung & Disc Quality, check this out. Also I would try out 8X or 12X for write speeds with that drive.
