DVD+R DL problems

I just bought my first pack of DL disks and I’m having major problems burning. So far I’ve made 7/8 coasters and I’m not sure what’s going on. The one disk I did make failed data verification. Do I have a bad batch of disks or is something else wrong. I’ve never tried to troubleshoot anything like this before. Any help would be appreciated. I’ve attached the error log. Here are the basic particulars

The media is Verbatim DVD+R DL model:95166
Burner: NEC ND-3550A bios 1.06
Nero Express: 6.6.0.15

Try burning with IMGBurn for DL backups instead of Nero…or DVDFab platinum works great…

First what kinda media brand did you buy? And what speed where you burning and copy at? Also is your HD defraged? What program are you turying to burn? I know you posted your txt files but that is sometimes way to much infomation to give much good advice as most of us users are varying in experiences with different programs and hardware configuration. Is your burner firmware updated as I don’t have a NEC drive. What kinda format are you using?

I think log files are very useful, there’s always someone around to decipher them and pinpoint what’s wrong from them.

Yes I know about that part I was just saying that there some that limit time to review and go over error logs to decipher the spot where to check for the error. Don’t get me wrong but a error log does come in handy when troubleshooting. I was just trying to have them first get a starting point then go on from there.

I’ve tried mostly 2.4x I also tried 8x

I didn’t even think about defragging my drive. It’s probably in bad shape.

'm backing up mpeg2 files from my camcorder. My hard drive is filling up so I need to make space.

I did update the firmware to the latest 1.06 firmware.

Sorry I’m not sure I know what this is. The log file may have that info. I was just trying to burn a data disk.

So open IMGBurn got to data disk folder/file, build iso and burn to VERB DL at 2.4x, …6x,or no more than 8x…IMO!

Thanks. I’m going to defrag and try imgBurn now

As Arachne says, the log is very useful, and indeed shows the problem straight away:

Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)
This means your drive can’t recognise the disc type or manufacturer’s ID, which it needs to plan how to make the burn properly.

You still haven’t told us what brand of DL medium you have…

imgBurn didn’t work either.

The disks I’m using are Verbatim DVD+R DL MKM 001
8xSpeed.

Thanks for your help.

MKM001 is rated 2.4x!

Use Imgburn and post the log here.

OK here’s the ImgBurn log.

So the last two times the burn has completed successfully, but afterwards the drive is not able to read the disk.

I’m trying to take mpeg transport stream files from my camcorder down to 7Gig files and backing them up. I should be able to burn single large files right? The whole reason I got the DL disks was to split my videos into larger chunks so as to require less disks.

Does it matter that I use only UDF?

I see it says book type as DVD+R DL have you tried to change this to DVD-ROM booktype to make it more compatible?

Do as coolcolors suggested and change booktype to DVD-ROM…also in IMGBurn set mode to build iso, in options set file sys. to ISO9660+UDF…I know some will say no need to build iso but try it anyway…btw you can tick on “test mode” won’t actually burn on disk …

Unfortunately changing the booktype to DVD-ROM only helps compatibility with standalone DVD-Video players, and this NEC drive should detect the burned disc with its original +R DL booktype.

If you notice, the OP is burning data rather than an existing ISO file, so the only way ImgBurn can achieve this is by building an ISO first.

Using test mode probably won’t help because it’s the verification stage that reveals the problem. The actual burn process doesn’t appear to show any errors.

@dfifo: There’s a possibility that this drive is broken. Can you download CD-DVD Speed and try the Disc Quality test?

Update your firmware for bitsetting

Use 1.07 from Liggy’s and Dee’s: http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/NEC-ND-3550A/

Which is why I suggested build iso…

For such big files UDF is the only option.

Make sure you choose the right UDF version, 1.02 seems best.

I finally got a burn to work. I made an ISO with Nero, then burned the ISO with Alcohol 120%…

I also updated to 1.07 firmware. so who knows. I’ll experiment a bit more with what program I use to write the ISO.

Imgburn - the BEST.
