DVD+R DL fails on new Plextor 716a

Hey all,
This is my 1st post. I have a new Plextor 716a FW 1.08
just updated today and I have
spent the weekend making coasters out of about
8 Memorex DVD+R DL 2.4x DVD’s …
I tried to use the following software to burn with :
Roxio drag to disk
Ulead DVD Workshop 2
Plextor Professional 2.24

all fail with a Media error referenceing a seek error about half way through.
I can successfully burn to Memorex DVD+R at 16x with no problem.
It is just the DL disks. I am trying to DVD author a movie
I made for a side job and really need the space of the DL disks.
I am going to call tech support tomorrow but wanted to see if there
was anyone else having this issue.

Might get more help if a Mod moved this to the Plextor Forum.

Seek error refers to media problem. There are many reports that the Memorex DVD+R DL does not work very well.

Return the Memorex and get the Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL.

Thanks for the replies. I was able to copy 7.9G of Digital image files
in multiple folders using CopyToDVD this morning.
A co-worker said that he had read somewhere that using a single large size
data file might be an issue due to errors crossing the DL boundary.
He suggested breaking up the movie I am mastering into multiple chapters
than burning it.
I’ll post to the Plextor forum as well.

well … I was wrong , the 7.9 GB burn failed …
so far all of the Mem DVD+R DL disks I burned that
were over the DL boundary have failed … $75 down the
tubes :frowning:
I will get a couple of the VB disks today and try them.

doughealy: I guess you have figured it out yourself by now: always buy one or a few discs and test them, never buy bigger amounts of discs you haven’t tested yet.

If the Memorex dual layer are Ritek discs then they will burn fine in certain burners (NEC, LG, Pioneer), maybe the Plextor 716 isn’t one of them.
We need Taiyo Yuden to bring out a dual layer disc to give Verbatim some much needed competition.

Yep … I have gotten a crash course in DVD burning the last several days.
This forum is a great source if info as well …

the Memorex are Ritek , at least that is what plxtor Pro says

Then that is your problem… sorry. Ritek DVD+R DL is crappy at best in my experience, regardless of which writer you use to burn these discs with.

Well … the Verbatum DVD+R DL from the 3 pack worked fine. I burned a 7.1GB
.iso file created in DVD Workshop 2 with Plextor Pro and had no problems.
I guess I learned my lesson about media compatability :frowning:

Good that it works at least with the Verbatim.

@G@M3FR3@K: I have yet to see a Ritek disc my 716A would like…
Ritek 004 48 (DVD+RW): extreme crap. :Z
Ritek R02 01 (4x DVD+R): crap.
Ritek R03 02 (8x DVD+R): extreme crap. :Z

Ritek single layer discs work fine, just not with Plextor right now it seems. Have you tried any Ritek -R ?

True. My father’s burner (don’t know the brand unfortunately) seems to like Ritek DVD+R 4x, but my Plextor just hates them.

Have you tried any Ritek -R ?

No, and I won’t. :disagree:
The perfect media for my 716A is Taiyo Yuden, but I can’t find any at the moment.

Hi Guys!

I want give one more crap media: Ridisc DL 2.4
2 went to trash…

God nows how many movies i burn, and still didn`t see they crash on my standart DVD PLAYER :a

Verbatim: :flower:
Ricoh: :flower:

I used a few of the Memorex 2.4 DL +R’s. The burned OK, however some players can’t read them. Again, I blame the media, as the Verbatim DLs burn/read fine.

Also using fw1.08

When I ordered my 716-A from Newegg, I also ordered the reduced priced DVD+R DL 5 pack. On the outside of the box it says RiDATA. Is that the same as Ritek and I should be wary of using them in this unit???

lol Again Ritek…

ridata is a ritek owned company and those are without a doubt riteks and you should be worried :Z

there are also non branded ones at www.rima.com

I don’t know how old this is, but I just ran across it today:

Don’t know how reliable it is either.

Do you folks burn this DL stuff w/ PoweRec??
