either will back up any dvd title. you need to be aware that certain home and computer dvd players may only play one of the two formats. theres sites out there that list compatabilities but the best way is just to burn some of both types and see if they work. usually dvd-r will work with all newer home players (some older sony homeplayers and a few others have issues playing dvd-rs). dvd+rs are a bit more tricky some older players play them fine while some newer players have issues. this is where bitsetting comes into play tricking the player into thinking the dvd is a dvd-rom (ie video) which works in most cases (but not all). the nec doesnt support bitsetting natively without a firmware hack though.
if i were a burning novice i would start with dvd-rs with the stock nec firmware. best name brands to buy would be memorex, maxell, verbatim, and fuji. (TDK is popular but the quality of those disks can vary..ie ritek media).
