DVD Overburning Problem - invalid block address

vbimport

#1

Hi all,

I’m using a Sony DRU-810A DVD burner(Firmware 1.0a), and I have some problems with overburning dvds on it. CD-Freaks states that the 810A is capable of overburning, but everytime I try to overburn a dvd, I get a “invalid block address” error towards the end of the burn, and unreadable files at the end of the disc.

Using Nero Burning Rom 7.5.1.1. Sony Acccore DVD+R (same problem occurs with other media). Nero CD-DVD Speed overburning test reports maximum disc capacity of 4631 MB, set maximum DVD Size of 4600 MB in Expert Features tab. DVD drive In DMA mode.

Welcome to cdfreaks Voldenuit.

Your drive is possibly BenQ DW1640 or DW1650 rebadge. I haven’t test with the latest Nero 7 update but as far as I know, Nero 6 and 7 support Overburning DVD+R only for Plextor drives.

For BenQ drives, you can achieve overburning with ImgBurn (freeware, check google to download).

You might also want to take a look at this thread: BenQ DW1655/DW1650 overburning thread as there is some info about DW1640 drives as well (ie minimum overburning size etc).

Thanks for the welcome, Zevia.

Thread looked interesting. Will have to spend some time reading up on it.

What software did you use to overburn the 810 with in your review?

Will give IMGBurn a shot. Report back later.

Cheers,
V.

In the Advanced Test of the review, I was using Nero CD-DVD Speed to test the overburning capabilities. As mentioned in the DW1655/1650 overburning thread above, in addition to ImgBurn, you can also use Nero CD-DVD Speed to burn your ISO image. You can find Nero CD-DVD Speed in your Nero 7 folder > Tools.

Thanks to zevia for his help and guidance.

Used IMGBurn to overburn a DVD+R (4570 MB). Verified okay, CRC32s checked out, and Nero CD-DVD Speed scan was good (although the Sony doesn’t report PIF  ).

Couldn’t get Nero CD-DVD Speed to burn an oversized ISO, though, kept getting an error message telling me the compilation was too big.

Anyway, IMGBurn is heaps better than Nero in every respect except UI. The drive is much quieter when burning, and the annoying spinups Nero likes to do are missing. Also, the files are burnt sequentially, which is a great help when burning a tv show or sequential videos onto the disc.

Cheers,
V.
