DVD not reading under Win7

Toshiba laptop Satellite Pro L850 - ok 3 weeks ago when new. Now will not recognise DVD - CD recognised ok - Toshiba support say software problem - several issues found on the website but no solution. Toshiba say windows need reinstalling.
Does any body know the correct settings for registry entries I suspect something amiss here as the drive seem duplicated under the second listing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\0001\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE

Hi and welcome to the forum

Before to reinstall windows, there are a couple of tests you can do

First of all, do you have this problem only with burned DVD or with every DVD?

Because of the drive has two separate lasers for DVD and CD, if you can only read CD but no DVD at all, it is possible that the drive is damaged, so reinstalling the operative system will not fix the problem.

If you have problems in reading only burned disc but pressed discs can be read fine, then the problem is not in the drive. Burned discs can become unreadable so there is no reason to reinstall operative system.

To be sure that operative system is not involved in any way in the drive malfunctioning, you can run an easy test. Download a linux distro like Knoppix and burn it on a DVD (ask a friend some help if you don’t have another DVD burner available). Then, try to boot the computer from the knoppix DVD. Don’t worry, the disc will not make any change in your system, you only need to check if the drive is able to read the disc or not.

If the system can boot from the knoppix DVD, then there is something wrong in the operative system, but again, before to reinstall report the problem here, we’ll try to fix it in some way

Thank you for the response. I did twig to try a boot disk which failed. Toshiba when given info then agreed to supply a replacement drive. Still awaiting the outcome. aw

You’re welcome

Let us know if you solve
