There isn’t enough info that we can decipher what software and hardware your using to know what is going on?

If this is a normal DVD-Video disc (you can see that in file explorer when the folders AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS are on the disc), then you are missing the DVD Codec playability. Install something like PowerDVD.

If this is a data DVD with some videos on it (.AVI, .MKV, stuff like that) you will need a player that can handle such things. The VLC media player can handle 99% of all video formats.

Welcome to the forums pcowner

Chances are you are using windows media player and simply installing a MPEG-2 decoder will allow you to play DVDs.

Alternatively, you can use VLC player which is free and will play DVDs along with almost every other type of video file: http://www.videolan.org/

EDIT: MR. B beat me to it!

I like VLC for a lot of different formats, but for playing dvds I find it less than satisfactory on many movies. Panning shots especially show a jerky motion in VLC that doesn’t happen with commercial software, like Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater.

If you want a free solution for playing dvds, I’d use Media Player Classic Home Cinema. http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/

The OS/system requires proper codecs installed to play the discs content back.
