This problem started a couple weeks ago. I have tried most solutions that have been presented to me on fixing the problem. In my opinion it's probably time to toss it out and buy a new dvd drive. But I am just grasping for straws basically to see if I missed any possible solution.
My dvd drive is a "Sony DVD RW DRU-830A"
It is half a year past the warantee and has been used constantly
My Motherboard is Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
I have attempted to install the latest Firmware
renamed the upper/lower filters in the registry
reinstalled the dvd drive
reinstalled windows xp w/ sp2
...I will test the drive later today with a friends computer
Now here is my exact problem...
The dvd drive will read any cd without a problem. It will also read actual dvd movies without a problem. However when I put in any dvd-r or dvd-rw, the autoplay will detect it as a cd. I have tried multiple brands of dvds with the same problem (hp, memorex, maxell, sony). On My Computer with nothing in the drive it will read as "DVD-RAM Drive " when I put in a dvd-r/rw it will read as "CD Drive " it takes approx. 10-15 seconds to attemp to read the writable dvds. On the image besides the drive it will show the dvd-r symbol. So it can differenciate between the two. So basically it is detecting that it is a dvd-r but at the same time it's saying it is a cd drive. (screen shots can be provided if asked). When I first had this problem, burning data disks on nero it would hide the actual drive. so when I selected what drive to use I would just get the "image recorder". I did figure out a way to burn dvd's by messing with the options in nero. I also have tested burned movies on a dvd player, so it's still burning correctly. Haven't tested out dvd data disks on another computer yet.
If you still need more information I would be happy to give it to you. As I mentioned in the beginning, it's probably time for a new drive, so if there isn't a possible way to recover this In my mind I already lost it. Thanks for your help.
