DVD Drive won't burn DVD's

Hello, I’ve tryed searching everywhere for my kind of problem but I can never find the same problem as mine, I’ve tryed other similar problem fixes but those never worked, I just can’t find anything so I decided to post and see if anyone can help me.

My problem I’m having is whenever I try to insert a blank DVD disk my computer freezes, I can do everything normally but I can’t enter My Computer nore can I use Nero while the DVD is inside.

D - DVD Rom
E - DVD-RW
Windows XP SP2 Home edition
Latest version of Nero.
Latest version of DVDIdle Pro, I did have other stuff but I removed them all because they might caused problems between each other.

The problem isn’t hardware (I think) because awhile back I had the same problem but worser where it would not detect any disks on both D and E drives, I then restored my computer after that my DVD Rom started to work but not my DVD-RW. I replaced the cables, I also tryed using it on a different computer and it worked, after I put it back on my computer it worked since then it’s been working on and off. I think some of the problems were because of me installing different types of burning software.

Anyways, today i decided to give it another go and burn something i needed backedup, I installed Nero after not having it for about one week, The DVD I tryed to backup was Ice Age the movie because my little sister is very ruff on the disks and I thought I’d back it up before it gets completly unplayable.

After using Nero it said something about cannot copy protected disks, I then found DVDIdle Pro searching Google, turned it on and then I could start the burning using Nero, while it was burning, I messed around with the settings and accidentally made it copy onto harddisk instead of direct from disk. (quick burn.) after waiting quite sometime, it failed and none of the drives could detect a DVD, I restarted and then it could detect DVD’s but now my burner keeps freezing every time a blank DVD is inside.

Thanks for reading, I’m really stuck and really want to get stuff backed up before I loose them. If anyone can help me, I would really apreshiate it.

Thanks in advance, Savas.

Welcome to CD Freaks.

Obviously you didn’t read the rules properly or didn’t understand them.

Post the same question twice is called cross-posting & frowned upon here. It can cause confusion & must be avoided in future.

Copying on the fly is not recommended. To backup copy-protected discs you need a program like AnyDvd (21 day free trial from www.slysoft.com).

What DVD burner do you have?

Do a test burn using Nero CD/DVD speed and also use the disc info tab to give us the MID listed.

Thanks for posting, I first posted on hardware forum then thought maybe it was a software issue, I still didn’t want to remove my first post incase it was a hardware issue.

On device manager it just says DVDRW IDE 16X, I can’t find the case so I dunno what the full name is, I could try opening it up to see if it has any names around it. Apart from www.drvupdate.com on the front nothing else.

I downloaded the Nero speed thing, But when I run it, the start button is grayed out and nothing I can do, I tryed inserting a DVD in and nothing changed. I’ll try with other disks, I’m having to restart because i ran the drvupdate.com website and it found a recent firmware update for the DVDrw, so testing that. thanks for the enquiry.

After using a CD it worked, no DVD’s work on that drive, just locks up. After the update, still no luck on the blank disks, or any DVD disks. normal CD’s work fine though. I also tryed to burn a normal CD and it worked.

Sounds like maybe the DVD discs you are using aren’t compatible with the burners firmware. Most likely if the drive is labeled as a DVDRW it is a rebranded version of a popular manufacturer’s drive. Need to take it out and look at the label and get the Brand/manufacturer info as well as the model #. That will be the only way to figure out what it really is.

BTW, DVD drives use different lasers for CD’s and DVD’s to perform their respective tasks, so it is entirely possible the DVD laser may be on the fritz.

Hmm, Ok i’ll take it out and check it, But I managed to burn a DVD using a DVD-RW disk instead of just a DVD-R disk, and it worked, and currently it isn’t detecting any type of DVD even orginal movie disks.

Could there not be something wrong within the system thats corrupted for specific format? I mean, it can read DVD-RW disks and not real DVDs and blank DVD-R ones, I’ve tryed deleting the drive from device manager and reinstalling it, but that never worked… I could try it again, but is there anything else i could try to ‘refresh’ or ‘restore’ it completly, (apart from full windows reformat.)

Personally, I’m clueless to whats actually happening and what actually working and when it last worked, It just on and off.
