DVD Drive not reading any disc

Hi.
I use TSSTCorp CDDVDW SHS223B dvd drive. Today I tried to burn a dvd using nero. After a few minutes it started to make noise and nero showed a error. I aborted the action and took out the disc from the drive. I had to use ctrl+alt+dlt. Ever since my dvd drive is not reading any disc. I checked device manager and it showed the device is working properly. Also tried uninstalling-reinstalling the dvd drive. Please help.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum!

Can you boot up from your Windows CD/DVD? This would eliminate a Windows/software issue with the drive. (Remember to choose your DVD drive as the first boot device in the PC’s BIOS/Boot menu).

Maybe poke about on your PC, see if you can find Nero’s log file for that last burn? That would show exactly what was going on during that last failed burn.

What version of Nero are you using? As the location of the log files seems to change with some versions.

Thanks for the reply Arachne. I will try to boot using the dvd drive. It already is my primary boot device. I am using Nero 8. Can you tell me where I can find the log file?

#4

Cool, let us know if the drive boots or not, and we can go from there.

The location of Nero 8’s log files depends on what version of Windows you’re using:

For XP, it’s C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username\Application Data\Nero\Nero8\ Nero Burning ROM

And for Vista, it’s C:\Users\Your Username\AppData\Roaming\Ahead\ Nero Burning Rom (if it’s not in that folder, try C:\Users\Your Username\AppData\Roaming\Nero\Nero8\Nero Burning ROM)

I don’t have a clue where the file is with Win7, as I don’t use that OS.

EDIT: Your Nero serial number will be at the beginning of the log file - please remove this before copy’n’pasting the log

Tried to run the Kaspersky Rescue Disc which I had used earlier. It was supposed to boot from the dvd. No such luck. Windows started as usual.
This is the log I found.

Your CD/DVD drive has to be first in the boot order in the BIOS to boot from a bootable disc.
Some computers will let you choose by hitting a key listed on the BIOS start screen like F12 for example.
the Nero log indicates the media is a type not recognized by the drive.
So try Verbatim or TY. Also try a commercial movie DVD disc.
This can be caused by a dirty or failing lens also.

#7

My dvd drive is the primary boot device by default. I checked that before and after using the rescue disc. I have tried all types of cd and dvd. I also inserted a Verbatim disc containing some videos. Nothing happened. It is not just reading anything. Cleaned the lens also. Oh and one more thing I have forgotten to mention. The discs don’t spin when inserted. Am I to take that it is a hardware problem?

#8

Certainly sounds like it :frowning: - if that’s the log from when the last burn failed, then it looks like the drive wasn’t seeing the media even before you aborted by hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL.

Might be worth checking the SATA cable connecting the drive to the mobo is snug, although I suspect the drive is toast.

Last ditch thing would be to try the drive in a different PC, if you have a willing friend or family member.

#9

I agree with Arachne on checking the cable connection. With a couple of additions. Usually there not loose if you haven’t either been doing something inside the case or moving the computer .
The failure to spin up is a good indication of drive failure.
You could do a spin test with :
Nero DiscSpeed Version 4.11.4.0 or Nero CDDVD Speed Version 4.7.7.0 .
Those are the versions I have so I just copy & pasted the names . I’m sure other versions will do the same test.
IMO when you open the case to check the cable already have a new or known good drive to replace the old one.
I don’t know how heavily you use your drive but a 15 minute break between burns is a good idea. Less between reads.

#10

These Drives are not that expensive, you can even spend a little more and upgrade. Just change out the Drive, and I’m sure your problems will be solved.

#11

Yup. Turned out to be hardware problem. Changed my dvd drive last night. Now all is well. Thanks all for your help.

#12

You’re welcome.

#13

BTW, this is asking for trouble:

“Multisession : TRUE
Multisession type: : Start multisession”

#14

Couldn’t understand. What’s wrong with making a multisession disc?

#15

Bad idea with DVD, cause it creates trouble…
