Hi guys, my first post on the forum. Strange problem...
NEC DVD+/-RW ND-6500A; Windows XP SP2; Nero Enterprise 220.127.116.11; DVD Shrink 18.104.22.168
This evening I burnt a data DVD with 6 DivX (AVI) files, put it in my DVD player (not on a PC) which plays DivX files as well, tested it, it all seems fine. Then I put it back to PC just to take another look, but Windows would see it as a blank CD - with absolutely nothing on it! From command prompt as well.
I took it out of PC, and put in another DVD with 5-6 AVI files, which I burnt 7-8 days ago. Again - nothing! However, I've viewed all files on this disc on my DVD player, I just never checked it in the PC. I thought there might be something with AVI files not being seen properly on PC somehow, so I inserted into a PC a disc with a DVD movie, i.e. VOB files, that I DVDShrinked two weeks ago. Nothing is seen on the disc, although I watched this movie in DVD player!
I installed a small app "CD Check", and tried to scan the disc - but it said "The volume does not contain a recognised file system". Although, as I keep repeating, DVD player sees them perfectly!!!
Going back chronologically, I put in several discs, all same - PC's DVD drive shows them as blanks, DVD player sees them perfectly, until I found one, made about 2 months ago, that can show files on the PC as well! I thought back to that time, about 2 months ago, but can remember absolutely nothing about config of Windows, Nero, DVD Shrink, hardware, anything that I've changed for at least a year.
Then, I just looked at the surfaces of two DVD discs, one that is "OK" and one that is not, and noticed something. On a disc that cannot be recognized on a PC, there is something that looks like a think circle of unused space on a disc, all around a centre. You know when you burn something on a CD, but only 300 megabytes out of 700? You can visibly see two shades - where surface next to the centre is used, and outer rim which is not. In this case it is opposite: every DVD disc burnt in last 2-3 months, be it through Nero or DVD Shrink, looks like having a thin circle of unused space around the centre, and then used up written data all the way to the edge?!?
However, I have noticed a pattern - it's to do with DVD media. I've always used DVD-R Verbatim 4.7 Gb. I used to get DVD's which have "white" on the non-data side, and about 2-3 months ago, I bought another batch of what I thought, was the same media. Although they were DVD-R Verbatim 4.7 Gb, they were clearly different, as they have a silvery-shiny non-data side, with Verbatim logo and specs inprinted. Every single one of these discs is written "wrongly" in the manner explained above!
Has anyone got experience in these matters? I take it I simply shouldn't use these discs any more, but is there any way to salvage data already written on the ones that are burnt? I can see them on DVD player, but I'd hate not to be able to copy them again for my friends. And how can I copy them if the Windows does not see the files?...
Thanks for any info. Sorry for the long post
