DVD burning hangs (Lite-On 20A4P + Nero 6.3.1.6)

Burner: Lite-On DH-20A4P 9P53
Software: Nero 6.3.1.6
Discs: +R: Verbatim MCC004, Playo MCC004. -R: Verbatim MCC03RG20.

Got the 20A4P from Newegg before Thanksgiving. Burned more than a dozen DVDs in the first two weeks with no problem. Didn’t have time to play more with it until last weekend, when it suddenly gave me the following problem:

Burning hangs at anywhere from 10% to 90% finished; the progress bar in Nero doesn’t proceed any more (as seen in the attached screenshot). While at the same time everything else seems working: the drive still spins at high speeds, the time counter in Nero still goes up correctly, buffer is almost full, Windows does not hang, Task Manager shows Nero is running (instead of not responding), CPU and memory/page file usages are all low. Have to use Task Manager to shut down Nero. After that the drive still spins as usual and does not eject, so have to restart the computer.

Searched around and saw many people had similar problems, but I didn’t find a perfect match to the current situation, nor did I find a solution to the problem.

More details:

  • I’ve been using a Toshiba SD-R5112 on the same system with the same Nero for years without any problem.
  • This problem has occurred in roughly 5 out of 10 burns in the past couple days. (That is, about half of the times the burns completed correctly, but the other half of the times there was this problem.)
  • It has happened to all the four MIDs listed above. No visible defects on any of the discs.
  • It has happened to various file formats: disc images burned using the burn image command, data files burned using the UDF option, and video files burned using the DVD-video option.
  • Symantec auto protection is disabled during burning.
  • DMA settings are corrrect.
  • I haven’t update the firmware because the drive is a new product and 9P53 is ok (at least for MCC004) from the scans seen in the 20A4P scan thread.
  • I cleared the OPC history in SmartBurn earlier last week and deselected all the items in SmartBurn (i.e., SmartBurn is enabled but all the extras are disabled.)
  • The Nero log file doesn’t have these incidents logged, because when the problem arises, Nero can’t finish the burn, and I have to shut down Nero in Task Manager.

Can this be an indication of a faulty drive, or there’s something else I need to check/correct? Thanks!

Since there’s no Nero log, I tried to use Filemon to see if can find any trace. Below is part of the Filemon log during yet another hang.

The first chunk is during the earlier stage of the burn, everything was fine at that time. The second chunk is when the burn hung. Note that the explorer.exe queries appeared in both chunks. In the first chunk, the explorer.exe queries were followed by nero file reads right away. But in the second chunk, there’s an 8-second gap before the queries. And after the queries finished at 5:20:48, nero didn’t come back. Instead, there were a whole bunch of csrss.exe queries starting 12 seconds later. I did notice the Used Read Buffer fell below half then came back to almost full right before the burn started to hang.

First would be what kinda media and burn speed are you using? Also your nero is way to old get a update to nero 6.6.1.15 that is the latest version from nero site. Also what kinda DVD format are you trying to copy over and what is the name?? Have you tried the source file to see if works before trying to burn it??? Maybe you should use the use first and see if the problem is the source DVD itself??

Thanks, coolcolors!

  1. I’m using Verbatim CMC PAPA MCC004, Playo MCC004, and Verbatim Prodisc MCC03RG20, burned at 12x or 8x. All have this problem at both speed. But again, the problem is not persistent; sometimes they burn well.
  2. The Nero is an old version, but I had never had problem with it using my Toshiba SD-R5112 4x DVD burner and Lite-On 32x CD burner. Plus, the first two weeks with this 20A4P was problem free; all the discs burned well. Will upgrade the Nero as the next troubleshooting step.
  3. I was not just trying to copy a DVD. I tried all the following: (1) burn image files, (2) backup some random DVDs, and (3) burn regular data files (html, picture, pdf and such). The problem popped up from time to time in all the cases. When I burned DVD-video discs on DVD+Rs, I set the book type to DVD-ROM.
  4. There’re all types of source files I burned, from regular documents and text data file to audio and video files. I’m pretty sure they all work. As an example, early this morning I was trying some large mpg files. They play perfectly fine on the computer. To experiment, I burned these same mpg files to one Verbatim MCC004 and three Playo MCC004 discs, two of them burned well, but the other two hung. (The burns on the Verbatim MCC004 disc and one of the Playo discs hung.)

ok, well then another check is make sure you have another burning program running while your using nero as well and make sure your antivirus and firewall isn’t on conflict with nero…also make sure your HDD is well defragged that could be also a source of problem when files get to big…
