Set-Up: I bought my laptop in 06 from ABS Computers and it turns out that it was just a MSI barebones that they put the extra parts into. It's an MS 1029 laptop with an ATi x700 GPU, AMD Turion 64 MT-40 2.19 GHz CPU, and 2 GB RAM. Any other info just ask, or take a look at this.
Problem: About a month after my warranty expired I noticed my DVD burner was being really finicky with discs, I thought it was just a chance of luck that it worked but them my computer stopped working altogether, it sounded like it would boot but the screen stayed completely black, originally assumed it was the backlight or the inverter in the LCD, turns out I had two corrupt sticks of RAM. Luckily it was Corsair it got them both replaced, but while my tech guy was taking a look at my computer I had mentioned the DVD drive wasn't working and he told me that it would play CD's but not DVD's. After testing a whole variety of discs it turns out that it will play any CD I put in it, whether it be ROM, R, RW, whatever. But it will not play any DVD's at all, nothing. Not sure if it burn one since I've only had it back from the shop for a day. Normally I would simply buy a new burner and slide it in, but while my tech was playing with my laptop he said he noticed that it didn't come out by any conventional means and didn't want to pry to hard without my knowledge, and after a little of my research, namely the spec sheet posted above, I realized the model came with a Built-in Optical drive. This is where I'm stuck. I would really like to have a working DVD drive if only because alot of the games I like playing are now on DVD's but it would also be nice to have a DVD burner to burn larger data files for my classes and what not. I'm hoping that once I tell my tech he will have some ideas but I'm trying to get as much input as possible so any ideas as far as maybe troubleshooting it or as to how to actually fix it would be very much appreciated. Oh, I also tried checking for new drivers for it but that was to no avail. Sorry that was so long winded, but I figured the more you knew about the problem the more you may be able to help.
