You do realize that if you go to Sony’s website it should be self explanatory. Taking the initiative is a good thing.

Both drives have:

4X DVD +/- R
2.4X DVD -RW
24X CDR
32X CD read

The 510A has:
4X DVD +RW
16X CDRW
12X DVD read

The 500AX has:
2.4X +RW
10X CDRW
8X DVD read

Bottom line, 510A has a couple nice speed improvements… especially the DVD +RW speed. 4X DVD write speeds means it takes about 15 minutes to burn a disc. This is on par with a fast CD burner which normally takes 2:30 to burn a disc (we’re talking just burn time). DVD has 6 times the capacity… multiply it out and you get 15 minutes to burn those 6 CDRs. So in reality, write speeds are pretty fast.

Both are priced the same in most retail stores, so the 510A is the best option for the money.
