Drive tray will not open after burning

Hi. This is Stick and I am posting for the first time.

My new Sony Optiarc AD-7220S will not eject the disc after burning a movie using NERO 9. My Pioneer is being repaired, so I bought this cheap drive for temporary use. My system is a HP Pavillion d4790y w/4G ram, 500G hard drive and Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit, SP1. NERO 9.2.7.7. After ejecting the disk manually, the video will play on my computer, but not on my Panasoni DVD player that is connected to my TV. Is this a NERO problem, or did I waste $24 on this burner? Thanks in advance.

@ stick506,

With the very limited sparse information you provided in your above posting it would be difficult for Forum Members to hazard a guess as to why your recorded video fails to Pay/View in your “Panasoni DVD player”.

In your above posting that you imply that Sony Optiarc AD-7220S Optical Drive is somehow an inferior Optical Drive and/or the N e r o 9 software program is incapable of producing acceptable results. This not the case – the Sony Optiarc AD-7220S Optical Drive when quality Media is used and the correct proper recording procedures and technique are used will produce excellent results. Also when the N e r o 9 software is used correctly it will produce excellent results.

If you review “The top 5 Optical drives of 2008” (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f61/top-5-optical-drives-2008-cd-freaks-members-choice-249785) thread you would see that the Sony Optiarc AD-72XX series Optical Drives were the 3rd Optical Drives of choice by CD Freaks Forum Members.

Concerning your above quoted statement perhaps you have forgotten your CD Freaks Forum 19 Jun 2006 posting ->

http://club.cdfreaks.com/1954169-post15.html

Perchance does your current Sony Optiarc AD-7220S Optical Drive failure to “eject the disc after burning a movie using N e r o 9” have anything to do with you your above 19 Jun 2006 referenced posting ?

I had forgotten about my June '06 posting. This is not related. That drive turned out to be bad. I am currently using Ricoh HJPN D01 media which I have had good luck with in the past. When burning with NERO, it does not appear to finalize the disk although it says it completed successfully. I would be glad to give more information if I knew what the forum members need. Thanks, again.

@ stick506,

You were ‘Lucky’ with your previous use of Ricoh HJPN D01 DL Media but unfortunately Ricoh HJPN D01 Media DL Media has a rich well documented history of being poor quality problematic DL Media. A Google Search (http://www.google.com) will confirm this fact.

As previously stated the Sony Optiarc AD-7220S Optical Drive when QUALITY MEDIA is used and the correct proper recording procedures and technique are used will produce excellent results. Ricoh HJPN D01 Media DL Media is not quality Media.

It has been discussed numerous times through out the CD Freak Forum that the ONLY DL Media that consistently produces quality error free results is Verbatim DL MKM001/MKM003 Mitsubishi Kagaku Media. ALL other DL Media has proven to be suspect and should be avoided (not used).

Also suggest ensuring that your Sony Optiarc AD-7220S Optical Drive has the newest most current up to date available Firmware installed. The CDFreaks dedicated Optiarc Burner Forum (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f86/) is an excellent source for Optiarc Burner Firmware.

The fact that N e r o is unable to finalize the Ricoh HJPN D01 Media DL Media is the most likely cause of your “Drive tray will not open after burning” problem. Using the known proven quality error free Verbatim DL MKM001/MKM003 Mitsubishi Kagaku Media should correct this problem.

I agree. I just bought some Verbs MCC 004 (made in Taiwan). Same problem. Also tried to burn audio CD (Verb disc) with NERO 9 and it also hung up. When burning DVD, when NERO indicates successful burn, the drive continues to spin, lights on, etc. and I still need to reboot to eject the disc.

Bad DL media.

If I understand correctly, this problem is with bad media. I just bought some Verbatim MCC 004 discs made in Taiwan. Same problem. Can I assume I have 50 more coasters?

If you look at the Read First postings prominently posted at the being of this Forum you will find the posting titled “Troubleshooting: Enabling/Checking DMA in Windows Vista, XP, 2000, Me, 9x” (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f61/troubleshooting-enabling-checking-dma-windows-vista-xp-2000-me-9x-101616) which details setting DMA Mode.

I apologize for my ignorance. The drive is SATA. DMA does not apply. The drive still spins continuously after burning until I reboot. I did get some TDK DVD-R discs that will play in my stand alone DVD player, but it’s still a pain to reboot every time. I guess I will have to live with it.
Thanks.

You are using Nero. Go into disc tab and select eject.

I can control the DMA on my SATA drives through device manager.

Again I must apologize. I discovered I had a bad SATA cable. Everything works as it should now that I replaced it. Sorry I wasted your valuable time.:o:o

Thanks for posting the solution.

I have a Sony Optiarc DVD-RW AD-7220S and it has recently been reluctant to open, whether by the front-panel pushbutton or the software “eject” function. In either case it tries a couple times and gives up. Until a month or so ago it would eventually open or the third or fourth try but now it consistently fails. I doubt that this is a cable issue since even the front panel button doesn’t work. Any suggestions are welcome.
