So I ran the same test as you using the LOTR Return of the King and Seven. My receiver is set to decode the EX/ES stream automatically and when I put in the originals, it does indeed show up with a EX next to DD or ES next to DTS. I verified this in the sound field by checking the rear speakers with the receiver set to direct so there is no additional sound processing done by the receiver. In this mode, I get sound from the rear two speakers ( I also have a seven speaker setup). If I disable this, then I only get the traditional 5.1. When I do this with the copies, I don’t get the EX indicator nor do I get any sound out of those rear speakers under direct mode. On a whim, I tried the original of LOTR Fellowship of the Ring and noticed that even though it states that it is an EX movie, it failed to be decoded as such by my receiver, so it seems that even the originals are having issues which makes me think that it may be my receiver…Thanks for your help.
