Does anyone own a Plextor Premium-U?

Is it equal to the standard IDE version when it comes to data and audio protections? I guess it should be, but feel free to enlighten me.

I have the Premium-U, I haven’t tried it with protection for now, but I really love its speed and accuracy, and most of all I love the Quality Check tests.
If I am not wrong, the USB version should be exactly the IDE version + an external envelope and an USB 2.0 interface + AC supply… This means that it is PHISICALLY the same as the IDE version…

Yes this is correct. They’re exactly the same drive.

Thanks guys, appreciated.

G@M3FR3@K,
to be honest, I found that the two drives are physically the same in one of your previous posts in another thread…!

Thanks for your constant and helpful presence on this forum.

I have put my 708A into a USB 2 external box,and it wont write
at 8x…
its ok on my mates desktop machine when connected to the
ide bus…

now i can only write at 4x when its plugged into my Sager 8890V
the data burst(using nero tools)says its 10,067…
when you need over 11,000 to write at 8x

I thought USB would tranfer files the same or as near ide

Nope, IDE is far better suited to handle these high data rates. When you have a fast computer with an USB 2.0 interface you should be able to burn at 8x but in your case your computer is simply not fast enough to handle the 11MB/s the drive requires at 8x recording :frowning:

hi
i have a laptop with a P4 3.2 at 800mhz/1gig 400mhz twinbank
read ram,dvd-r writer so on and so on

that should be plenty to power usb 2 ??

I guess not since you can’t burn at 8x. USB 2.0 is good in theory as it can reach data bursts of 480Mbit/second but in real life these speeds are never reached. I don’t think there is much you can do but I’m not a real hardware expert. Perhaps someone else has an idea on how to improve the USB 2.0 performance on your laptop (e.g. other drivers)?

well i tried every thing…still no go…
so i got a FireWire case hooked it up to my 8890 V and
bliss,it burns great now at 8x…
nero speed drive says this

USB 2 11,000kbs

firewire 20,000kbs

i wont be using usb2 again…

Interesting… A friend of mine, a real “tech-guru”, told me that Firewire is far better than USB2 even if, nominally, transfer speed is lower… your experience confirms that.

i get mine day after tomorrow, so i’ll let you know how well it runs on my laptop.
