Do I have to flash my 2500a to burn @ 8x?

I just picked up the NEC 2500a on an impulse ($82 @ newegg is hard to say no to). I’ve read through all of the firmware upgrade threads and have learned that G04 Riteks are bad to use with my new burner fresh out of the box.

My only question is, what media can I use @ 8x without flashing the drive? Is there a media that actually works on this drive 100% of the time at that speed? I’m sort of disappointed that there are so many issues with this thing out of the box so any input you guys can offer is greatly appreciated.

You can definitely burn at 8X with stock firmware.
No need to flash for that, you just need to buy good media such as Taiyo Yuden.

I am using 1.08 / HP 1.27 with Ritek G04’s. I can burn and read -R no problem, but only at 4x (Nero shows Max. 4x) … what do I need to burn these discs at 8x? Should I even try with these considering so many people seem to be having problems with Riteks?

May I should be using 1.07 b7 instead?

Hi chadw01
Im using the same firmware as you Im having great results with Datasafe DVD-R 4x GO4s writing @ 4xs. Dont worry about 8 xs as you will only shave 5 mins off your disc burns, better to have the quality than duff burns
