DMR-ES20D DVD-RAM discs fail

Hi all,
I have 5 Panasonic branded DVD-RAM 3x non-cartridge discs.
(DVD Identifier shows Manufacturer is “Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd”)
They all worked fine for over a year, but only had about 3 recordings each.

Recently, 2 of these gave the “UNFORMAT” error on the DMR-ES20DEB.

I tried formatting - no joy.
Tried formatting on XP in DVD-RAM drive (LG) - no joy
Tried formatting on Vista in DVD-RAM drive (Lite-On) - no joy

Any ideas?

What are you using to format them on the PC? You’d want the Panasonic RAM driver in XP, and check the discs for write-protection. (WPTool)

Have you recently cleaned the hub/spindle? Perhaps that’s all you need to do. See this thread:

Hi all,

I was formatting using Nero 6. (That fails with unspecified target error)

Formatiing on a separate Panny EZ27 also fails (brand new so no unlcean spindle. I may try cleaing spindle on the ES20 anyway - good tip Thanks.

Using the “Panasonic driver” DVDForm crashed with no error message if I tried UDF 1.5 and UDF 2.0, and gave error [0060-02033100] with FAT32.
The drive is a Lite-on DH20A4P, PC is XP SP3.

Then I ticked the execute physical format checkbox in DVDForm and chose UDF 2.0. It is now 20minutes into formatting - looking good - I will post later with the results.

Hi all,
yes it is now working fine in the ES20DEB after the physical format to UDF 2.0 using the DVDForm tool from the “Panasonic RAM driver” (downlaoded from this site.

Thanks.

Hi all,
further update
The first disc I formatted now has recording capacity 2hrs, 4hrs etc.

The second one has 2.06, 4.11 etc.

Weird eh?

The only thing that changed between formats was that I upgraded the Lite-on firmare to 9P59 (was 9P53)
