What is DMA? How do I know if my drive supports DMA?

#2

All modern drives will support DMA…check out this thread to check your drives’ DMA status.

Thanks, you guys are very helpful.

DMA is Direct Memory Addressing & is the most efficient way to transfer data on the PC. Without DMA enabled the process is very much slower & uses a great deal of CPU power to do it.
Any device that supports DMA but isn’t running in DMA mode will significantly affect the overall performance of the PC.

Modern Hard Drives run in Ultra DMA mode 5 & 6 and optical devices in Ultra DMA modes 2 or 4.
