DL burn failure at start of second layer

Any idea what might be causing these burn failures? I installed this BenQ 1655 drive last week and it has done well burning CD-R and DVD+R media, but it always fails early in the second layer when burning DL media. So far I’ve made four expensive coasters attempting to burn two different .iso files (made from DVD Shrink with no compression.)

Using Nero 7.2.3.2 and RiDATA 2.4x DVD+R DL media.

A better way to burn ISO is with ImgBurn. If ImgBurn and your DW1655 still fail burning RiDATA DVD+R DL (RITEKD01) then you need to switch to Verbatim DVD+R DL (2.4x MKM001, or 8x MKM003).

Thank you for the suggestion. Just tried using ImgBurn and looked into Tools/ISO/Display IFO layer break information. This message appeared:

Looks like I need to rethink how I create .iso files for burning DL. And I’ll definitely switch to the suggested media when I empty this 25 pack spindle of RiData which I bought before I came to cdfreaks and became enlightened.

Prolly more than a new burner, a spindle of 25 discs, and if it is under memorex brand, I say $50. But at least he knows it is the media fault. Most people when they buy memorex brand and if the burn is not good, they think it is their burner and go out and get a new burner. Speaking of Ridata, I still have 4 discs left, I am gonna play with it tomorrow under BenQ 1670. You would ask why I buy Ridata DL media?? and the answer is I did not buy it, it was free from NewEgg with the purchase of NEC drive a few months back. Yes a few months back and I only used one disc, still have 4 left. I was thinking of giving them away but then it is a bad to give them away because I dont want to be labeled with bad rep for giving useless stuffs away.

I’ve now had some experience with the 1655 and ritek d01. First off, the ritek are crap media, IME. Erratic results can be expected, but you should be able to burn at least [I]some[/I] of them to completion, and those discs will likely play OK on newer standalone players even though they fail verification. (Fast-forward thru all content with the time-counter running to check for freezes etc. before deleting the .iso image.)

Second, I’ve had nothing but trouble with the BCHB firmware–mostly in the form of inexplicably slow burning (8X media throttled to 2X, etc). I’ve had much more consistent results with BCDB (RPC1 version from The Dangerous Brothers). If you do move to Verb 2.4x DL media (MKM 001) you will also want to check out the MCSE tool available on this forum and swap the MKM 003 strategy in for the 001’s so you can write them at up to 8x speed. I’ve been burning a lot of MKM001 at 6x with no troubles, and it’s my current standard.

Finally, forget Nero for 1:1 backups. Rip with DVDDecrypter, burn from the .MDS file with ImgBurn. If you get that ‘no suitable layer break point’ error, you are probably trying to back up a PTP dvd–there are a few out there. The media you’re writing to are OTP-only. Not to worry: Download PgcEdit and read this thread carefully.
