It would be a shame if the idea were dropped. Think about it - how often haven't you rented dvds, because you knew that you'd be too lazy to bring it back, and the renting price would rise till the next day? But with this kind of dvds it's easy - all you have to do is rent, you don't have to bring it back. And 7 $ is ok for 48 hours, I am paying 3.20 euro for 2 days in Germany plus I have to spend money on gas to drive to the video store in order to give the dvd back. Plus often I am too lazy, wait for a couple of days before I bring the dvd back, which makes the whole thing even more expensive. So at the moment it's nearly as expensive as it would be with self destructive dvds, but by no means as comfortable. And as the guy above said, it's more than enough time to make a backup, plus I guess one doesn't need to rent for 48 hours, maybe there will be also dvds that self destruct after 24 or 12 hours, I need just 4-6 hours to backup the whole dvd with all extra features to a vhs, and that's all I want.
