Disk Compression Technology

Hey all, I have a simulation project to do for an ethic class. Basically our group would like to talk about the next generation of disk compression technology. I know the usual disk data are stored linearly and surfacely. I’ve heard from somewhere something called vertical layer storage, where disk data would basically be stored vertically on a disk instead of surfacely, and thus would maximize the use of space. Can anyone light me on this topic and tell me if I am on the right path? Or any suggestion of presentation would also be appreciated.

Hi striko_514, welcome to CDFreaks!

What you’re describing is known as “perpendicular recording” and is already being used in the latest generation of harddrives. E.g. the 160 GB harddrive in my laptop is using this technology.
