Difficulty burning DVD+R DL discs

vbimport

#1

I am having problems burning to dual layer DVD+R discs. I am using an LG GSA-4160B burner (using latest firmware A306) which should be capable of DVD+R DL burning.

I have no problems with single-layer discs. When I try dual-layer (I have tried Verbatim and Datawrite) I get various error messages; CopyToDVD states "Failed to set layer change to LBA 2007624 (3.83GB) - Code 07 27 00 [Data Protect, write protected].

I have tried 3 different softwares, and none have worked. I have tried burning different things (video and mp3s) and makes no difference. Any ideas what I am doing wrong??

Thanks
Dan

Forget the Datawrites, just post a log from the Verbatim(s).

Below is a log of the CopyToDVD attempt to burn a DVD+R DL data disc (starts at the bottom & works up). Hope this is helpful, thanks.

IMO, use IMGBurn for DL backups…and Verbatim media preferably…

I used IMGBurn. I had to convert the data to a .ISO file first. However, when trying to burn the .ISO, it still didn’t work. Below is the log from IMGBurn.

I just tried it with a different Verbatim disc in IMGBurn, and get the following error message:

DeviceIoControl(FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME) Failed!
Device: [1:1:0] HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4160B A306 (F:) (ATA)
Unable to lock volume for exclusive access.
Reason: Access is denied.

#7

Use 2.4x DVD+ R DL Verbs… and burn at 2.4x…

#8

The best way to burn DL disc is to use Verbatim media (Double Layer) and DVD Decrypter to burn DL media.

#9

This suggests that some other app has the burner open. Maybe you’ve got something like InCD installed. That message can be switched off in Settings by unchecking the exclusive lock box.

BTW DVD Decrypter does the same as ImgBurn and as ImgBurn is a development from DVD Decrypter is the better option.

#10

Exactly.

Besides, illegal obtained material will be no part of a discussion here according to the forum rules.

#11

There is not enough specific evidence to indicate that this is illegally-distributed material; and where this is the case, we give the benefit of the doubt.

Let’s get on with the topic as posted, shall we?

#12

Thanks guys. From that, the only advice I see is try to burn at 2.4x (which I have tried, as I read somewhere that this was the max. speed of my drive when burning DL) and to use DVD Decrypter instead of IMGBurn. I have tried to burn using the Vista burning software, using Cheetah DVD Burner, IMGBurn and CopyToDVD, so I doubt using another piece of software, DVD Decrypter, will do the trick. However I will now try using this at 2.4x with Verbatim media.

It didn’t work - below is the logfile.

I just tried it at 2x also, as I noticed that “supported write speeds” under “disc information” include 2x but not 2.4x. However, trying at this speed didn’t make any difference.

#14

I 15:23:10 Destination Media Type: DVD+R DL (Disc ID: MKM-003-00)
The A306 firmware doesn’t support Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL (MKM 003) media. It only supports these four DVD+R DL media:

MKM 001
PHILIPS CD2
RICOHJPN D00
RITEK D01

The only one I can recommend is the MKM 001 which can be bought as Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R Double Layer media.

BTW I got this information by downloading the firmware, unpacking it and loading it into MediaCodeSpeedEdit by ala42.

#15

ImgBurn is the better option as I pointed out earlier. But if it doesn’t work then neither will DVD Decrypter and vice versa.

#16

The lastest firmware doesn’t support my Verbatim discs? Then LG should say that on their website! I spent £25 on these discs, and £30 on some other ones that didn’t work! Why don’t these discs work?? I demand a refund !!

#17

Try this, DVDFABdecrypter full movie > IMGBurn build iso > burn w/Verbatim DVD+R DL media @ 2.4x…
Always works for me!!!

#18

Tried that already, doesnt work with my discs.

#19

Anyway, I took my discs back to the shop and am going to go with DrageMester’s advice and get the Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R DL. The girl in the shop said there was a difference between dual layer and double layer. The Verbatim discs I had said “double layer” on them (8.5GB). Is there such a difference?

#20

Yes there is such a difference.

DVD+R DL media is “Double Layer” and DVD-R DL media is “Dual Layer”. The reasons are tiresome and have to do with competition between the DVD Forum (DVD-R camp) and the DVD+RW Alliance (DVD+R camp).

What you need to buy is the Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R (“plus” R) Double Layer media.
