I have brought a new Liteon DH-20A3L and installed it into my system. The motherboard is a Gigabyte P35-DS3R. I'm running the SATA drive in the 'pata compatibility' mode, which is the standard mode for this motherboard.
The problem: Whenever I insert a new CD into the drive, when Windows tries to read it, the entire computer will continually hang for periouds of ~1-2 seconds. During this time the sound loops, mouse is unresponsive, etc. I have noticed with Process Explorer that 'Interrupts' are taking up 100% of one core (I have a Q6600) during these times.
I have tried upgrading the firmware but it didn't let me. Doesn't recognise the drive string:
No matched drive detected !
This utility is only for ATAPI DVD A DH20A3L drive.

Any ideas what the cause is? I've noticed the issue doesn't happen all the time, but usually around 50% of reboots it happens. I've tried different (known working) SATA cables and ports on the motherboard.
