Desktop and Portable Drives?

What’s the difference between portable and desktop?
Is there any?
I have a 320 portable drive by WD…
I am planning on buying a 2TB drive (not the huge kind though)
Anyways, my question is, can you use that 2TB drive as a portable one.
Like say for instance, save your stuff, unplug and take it with you like I do with my portable one.
Or does it have an OS and/or merges with your computer drive.

external HDDs are always portable. The bigger HDDs (3.5") always come with an external power supply, the smaller 2.5" drives don’t (and violate USB specs due to drawing more power than specified for an USB port).

You could use an enclosure to make any kind of IDE or SATA device portable.
