i'm sorry k9cop, but all of the workarounds involve some major editing of the registry with no guarantees of success. all of this is due to the fact that you did an upgrade instead of a clean install of xp. i have seen many attempts to upgrade to an nt variant from a 9x version and i have never seen one that didn't cause many problems at one time or another.
i know it hurts but i suggest that you bite the bullet and do a clean install of xp. not just for the sake of alcohol, but you will find many other such problems as time goes by. you will find that your system will function much better and faster without the baggage that 98 leaves behind.
microsoft wouldn't even give the option for such upgrades if they really cared about their customers. i'm sure though that this capability sells more upgrades.
