[qanda]This thread is about the Asus DRW-1814BLT Black. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]Greeting Freak'rs! Noob here trying to troubleshoot my Asus DRW-1814BLT SATA DVD Lightscribe recorder, Asus FW v1.14. Drive is about 1.5 years old, has made good discs in the past.
System: XP Pro Sp3, Athlon 64 3700+, 3GB DDR400 RAM, Gigabyte KA8N MB, WD SATA Hard Drives, several external Firewire drives.
Problem: When trying to make Data DVD-R Backups of my photo library, I end up with images on the disc that are visually corrupted. The burning utility completes the burn and makes a readable DVD, but the Data Verification Stage indicates that many, many sectors on the disc differ from the HD source files. Exploring the DVD files confirms that some photos are indeed corrupt.
I have tried three different burning utilities (OEM bundled Nero Express Essentials 7.11 with the latest updates as of this writing, ImgBurn 2.4.2, Star Burn 10.5), each disc has ended up with defective pictures, unsuitable as archival backups.
I have tried two different DVD-R 16x media (TDK and Sony, both purchased from Costco Warehouses), same problem. I have tried limiting burn speeds (down to 4x) with same problem. I have burned both media in my MacBook Pro burner without problems.
I've made about 15 coasters so far in the past week, plus several others a few months ago the last time I tried to do backups. Have made good DVD-Rs on the same TDK media in the past. Not sure why I can no longer get a good disc.
No Problem: Ripping Audio CD's to iTunes, Playback of pressed CDs/DVD's, Writing to CD-Audio, LightScribe to CD-R LS media (only tried one LS so far, worked beautifully though I've heard on another forum of the LS function killing this model drive after just a few LS burns) all have worked perfectly with one exception - the drive now locks up when writing to CD-Audio via iTunes, but I believe I have had success in the past... this is not now my primary concern however.
Not sure whether to give up on this drive (SATA LightScribe DVD Burner recommendations?) or bother digging deeper. I believe warranty is expired by about 6mo.
