A little progress: I used stock firmware EP5A for DH20A3L and after reflashing I can open and close tray, but LED on drive is permanently blinking.

Any tips, please ?

Thanx in advance.

Hi Troy,

it was not possible for me to use this fw:

http://www.liteonit.com/DOWNLOADS/ODD/DH-16A3L/firmware/8P55.zip

But Steve and Mike K sent me their fw backups (ver.8H1B) - both files are binary identical.

I used this firmware backup and … My drive is WORKING AGAIN !!! EEPROM backup was not necessary.

Then I used this one upgrade from HP site and it worked too:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-59199-1&lc=en&cc=us&os=2093&product=3686674&dlc=en

But, strange thing is, that I’m not able to upgrade firmware to newest one (ver. 8P55 - from LiteOn site) - it says:

No matched drive detected !

This utility is only for ATAPI DVD A DH16A3L drive.

Detected drives:
1-1-0-0 H:ATAPI DVD A DH16A3L 8H1F

I see one added space between ATAPI and DVD in my drive ID, probably that’s reason why LiteOn fw can not be flashed to my(our) drive.
That’s probably because in our HP bundled drives is modified firmware by HP.
There would help extracted/unscrambled .bin firmware (ver.8P55) from not rebadged (not HP) drive.

Anyway, BIG THANX again, Steve and Mike.

Nice to know you got it working

Glad your drive works again.

BTW, your inability to flash DH16A3L retail firmware is because the firmware “OEM-versions” are mismatched. Your firmware would have to be a version in the 8Pxx family to update using the LiteOn flasher, and the HP firmware is 8Hxx–not a match.

Hallo everybody.
I’m having the same problem upgrading the firmware of my Lite-On DH16A3L on Windows XP Professional.

I downloaded the Lite-On “8P55.zip” but the extracted 8P55.exe exits with the following error:

No matched drive detected !
This utility is only for ATAPI DVD A DH16A3L drive.

Detected drives :
0-1-1-0 E:ATAPI DVD A DH16A3L 8H3D

I tried the Flash Utility (http://codeguys.rpc1.org/utilities/Flash_Utility-3.0.2.rar).
It worked for reading my Flash: now I have a copy of my 8H3D.bin (2MB size), but I cannot write the memory with the 8P55.exe file! The download exits with the following error:

The firmware was not found in the specified file!

Make sure the file is not compressed.

Actually, the “8P55.exe” file IS compressed (860.672 byte), but the Flash Utility info says that “Supports firmware BIN files and unscrambled Flasher EXE files”… besides I cannot extract it in any way.

Is there anybody that has a .bin or installable firmare version newer than mine (8H3D)?

I want to upgrade because I’ve seen that a lot of discs are not supported.
Thank you evry much!!

Hi I was wondering if I could get a copy of the 8H1B or 8H1F firmware (unscrambled) because my drive died after a misburn in lightscribe. It opens, closes and tries to read discs for a second but then stops.
I tried crossflashing to a 20A3L and it still won’t recogize any discs. But I didn’t backup my firmware first and now can’t get back. Found 8H3D on here but that didn’t help and I still can’t flash to 8H1F which says it fixed the problem of discs not being recognized after lightscribe burns.

I have a problem with my DH16A3L… I have a HP desktop with this drive installed. It used to burn CD-Rs perfectly, but now it won’t even read them. Blanks, original audio CDs, nothing… Only DVD media work fine. Firmware updates don’t work. Tried all of them. Lite-On original ones, patched ones (rpc1.org) and nothing works.

What could be the problem?

Tnx for your answers…

Hi and Welcome!

please try if you can boot off a bootable CD. (You may need to change the boot order in Bios if there is no boot menu) If that fails also, then that part of the drive’s optical system is dead.

Well it won’t boot from a CD… Then there’s nothing more for me to do, than to buy a new drive?
