I have tried variety of printable surface for CD/DVD from older AquaGuard to newer AquaAce and JVC Print Plus and Watershield and regular ink jet printable and wanted to compare impressions with others who have tried.
I have found that best coating I ever tried was AquaGuard. It was matte but very smooth, very accurate, very professional. But it seem they have chose to discontinue that surface, and I find that a let down. Muted colors but still very clear and consistent in print.
I tried Taiyo Yuden Watershield and found it scratch much too easily and the protective glossy surface can actually rub off. So I do not like those at all. Color looked ok, but that was about all.
I have tried Verbatim AquaAce and find that glossy coating to be pretty good. Not perfect but much better than Watershield. It recover from scratches ok and can be lightly buffed out without coating rubbing off. Colors are bright and vivid.
I just tried Taiyo Yuden Print Plus and find it to be very bad to print on. Marbled surface is inconsistent, edges on outside do not seem to be sealed well so edges look "spotty" and the line near center hub (the circle) is obvious and unattractive.
With most simple Printable Ink Jet discs I find they work well enough but do smear and do have poor color reproduction. Still, almost all end up looking better than Taiyo Yuden Print Plus in my thinking.
So end result is for glossy I find Verbatim AquaAce to be the best I have tried.
I find Imation AquaGuard to be the best overall surface I have tried, but since they are no longer available sadly, I have no good water resistant matte to recommend. I will use up my stock of them and keep looking for possible replacement.
Have others found good coatings for water resistance, especially matte?
