Crossflashing DS-8A3S ASUS to Dell

I salvaged an ASUS-branded DS-8A3S into an external drive case. It has ASUS firmware HA28 (which I believe is the only update from Asus, and was required to make the drive compatible with Windows 7 power management). This dates from late 2009.

In looking around for more recent firmware, I came upon a Dell update HD52 which, on the Dell web site is listed as having a late 2012 release date. (FirmwareHQ has the same file, listed as from 2009).

The Dell flasher refuses to recognize the Asus drive, of course … and the flasher seems to be encrypted and not supported by the XFlash utility - so I don’t have a .BIN file.

I think I know the answer is “no” - but is there any way to do the crossflash?

schuster, I can extract .BIN file for you, but I can do it only in Friday-Saturday.

Please make the dump from your drive with Flash Utility or DosFlash V2.0 (and share it)

Blackened - thank you for the offer.

Digging a little deeper I’m less convinced this is worth it.

I was puzzled by the fact that FirmwareHQ lists the Dell firmware as dating from 2009, but the Dell site says 2012. If you extract the archive, indeed the version.txt file is dated 2009. If you look at the actual Dell release notes, the only change is to address WHQL certification for Server 2008. I now suspect this firmware is actually of the same vintage as the Asus that is presently flashed in the drive.

I will be happy to post the dumps, though, later in this thread when I’m on my own PC.

Thanks! :flower:

HD52 is dated 2009/07/30 so its older than HA28 (which is dated 2009/09/04).

HA18 is dated 2009/06/25. There’s also a slightly older Dell OEM HD14 firmware dated 2009/05/08.

HP53 (http://www60.zippyshare.com/v/69209262/file.html) might be newer, but I don’t have a dump for it, so I don’t know its exact internal release date for sure. Maybe blackened2687 can extract it for us.

Thanks blackened2687 :flower:

For information, HP53 is dated 2009/08/25, so HA28 (dated 2009/09/04) is still slightly newer.

Many thanks for the dump.
I looked inside the binary and it also has a 2009 build date. As I suspected, the 2012 date on the Dell web site probably reflects a reissue or repackaging, and not a truly recent firmware rev.
