Creating DVD iso image from linux console and burning it

to shorten the question:
I am trying to create an iso image with mkisofs and then to burn it with growisofs.

details on the problem and description on my steps could be found here:

When I create the iso I can successfully mount it but when I burn it to DVD-R it could not be read.
I have tried creating an iso with first renaming all the files to very short names and without spaces (ISO9660 compliant) and everything was OK.
However I am using the Joliet and RR extensions so I should be able to use longer names and spaces … (non of the file have name longer then 64 chars)

the last thing I have checked (and is not mentioned in the link I have sent) is the error produced by dvd+rw-mediainfo:

Media Book Type: 00h, DVD-ROM book [revision 0]
Legacy lead-out at: 2298496*2KB=4707319808
:-[ READ DVD-R STRUCTURE failed with SK=3h/NO SEEK COMPLETE]: Input/output error

This also produced an system error log (dmesg | tail):
[135924.072580] hda: media error (bad sector): status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
[135924.072580] hda: media error (bad sector): error=0x34 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x03 }
[135924.072580] ide: failed opcode was: unknown
[135924.072580] ATAPI device hda:
[135924.072580] Error: Medium error – (Sense key=0x03)
[135924.072580] (reserved error code) – (asc=0x02, ascq=0x00)
[135924.072580] The failed “Read 10” packet command was:
[135924.072580] "28 00 00 00 00 10 00 00 02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 "
[135924.072580] end_request: I/O error, dev hda, sector 64
[135924.072580] Buffer I/O error on device hda, logical block 8

I am almost sure that the problem is in the filenames I just cant figure out what is it … is there any tool that can be used in combination with mkisofs to preverify if the path (I am generating the image from) is Joliet/RR complient ?

Since this isn’t really a Newbie question, I’ve moved it to the Linux Burning forum.
