CRC Error

Ok first thing, hi and this is my first post on the site so be gentle and feel free to move to noob forum.

System
A8N-E Mobo
AM1 4600 X2
9800GT GPU
2GB OCZ Platinum 3200
80GB Seagate Barracuda Sata HDD
25GB Unknown Virtual Drive IDE HDD
2x NEC Optiarc AD-7170S

Windows XP SP3
Prevx1
Avast
Windows Defender

The problem can be described simply:
When trying to write to a dvd-R or +R the following error occurs in ImgBurn at about 12% completion. It is preceded by the buffers fluctuating once or twice then I know it will fail
Failed to Write Sectors - Reason: Logical Unit Communication CRC Error (ULTRA-DMA/32).

So this is not an uncommon error, I have searched long and hard through this forum and many many many others, (can you sense the frustration?)

What have I done to fix it?
The last two weeks go something like this:

Updated DVD Fab HD Decrypter, IMGBurn, Clone DVD2, 1 Click Copy DVD 5, and DVD FAB 5.
Tried burning to cheap RIDisk DVD+R, failure, lots of coasters created.
Lots of research…
Checked IDE/ATAPI Controllers, didnt really understand if there was a problem, except learnt DMA has nothing to do with SATA?
Purchased DVD+R from Verbatim (meant to buy -R) tried to burn, failure.
Purchased DVD-R from Verbatim, failure.
More research.
Updated MOBO Bios from 1010 to 1013. In process updated nvidia drivers to 6.65.
Flashed one of the DVD burners to liggy 1.03 with mods (bitmapping etc (is that the right term?)
Checked ASPI, it was ok.
Retried burning to DVD-R, failure.
Moved flashed dvd writer to different sata port (sata hdd is on 1, dvd writers are now on 3 and 4.)
Tried burning to DVD-R, failure.
Changed sata cable of flashed dvd writer.
Tried burning to DVD-R, failure.
Cried.

All failures have been the same CRC communication error, all occured early in the burn process, none got futher than trying sector 1. All burning attemped with an ISO of one movie using ImgBurn 2.4.2.0.

Questions:

  1. Need to check the ATA/ATAPI Nvidia setup is correct, can post whatever screen dumps are required.
  2. Have I missed anything?
  3. Which burners should I order tomorrow?

Thanks in advance.

Buy another sata controller and use that with the optical drives.

Thanks for the suggestion, I might just try that as I just fitted a short sata cable to my modified drive and it has made no difference I still get:

W 14:18:29 Failed to Write Sectors 76320 - 76351 - Reason: Logical Unit Communication CRC Error (ULTRA-DMA/32)

This happened as early as 4% complete.

Imgburn carries on burning, what happens to those sectors not burnt? I assume I will have a faulty program / movie / files?

I tried burning some documents during the week to some Imation dvd-r. Still failed to burn.

I talked to the IT guys at work about this, now they run an aerospace standard setup, aprox 3-400 pc across 5 sites in the UK, they should know what they are talking about. They thought most of the things I have tried are bunkum. Their advice, get a different DVD writer.

I am not conviced there is anything wrong with the DVD writers, or my system, there is an incompatibility somewhere. Will try drive in another pc over the weekend and repost.

Just in case I have missed something here is my Imgburn log.

The mystery deepens.
Tried burning an iso file onto Verbatim CD-R

At 75%ish percent got the following errors

Failed to Write Sectors 76320 - 76351 - Reason: Logical Unit Communication CRC Error (ULTRA-DMA/32)

and

No additional sense information.

Trying to think of anything else missed I thought of the PSU, I changed to a 450W Antec from a 550W Ebuyer elcheapo, could the lower rating be the cause? Poor or insufficent power supplies can be the cause of all kinds of strange errors.

So I have unplugged one dvd writer and removed the wintv card that was gathering dust, there isnt anything else I can remove.

Guess what

At this point Imgburn is locked up, this has happened a few times, pressing stop doesnt help. Even if I kill imgburn the disc will not eject, windows will not close and a hard reboot is required. The disc will not eject untill I am back in windows again.

I went to Maplins this pm to get the Verbatim CD-R’s and thought to hell with this, I’m gonna buy a new drive…£40 for a liteon, I didnt get it. Maybe I should be on ebuyer now buying the same drive for £18 and then I wouldnt be writing this.

I wish I could be “giving” to the community by posting a solution, sorry to disappoint.

Anybody out there?

A faint smile grows from the corner of my mouth…

In a forum far far away…somebody advise I roll back my driver…

Control Panel - System - Hardware Tab - Device manager - IDE ATA/Atapi Drivers - “Burner Driver” - Properties - Roll Back Driver - Reboot

Re-tried my CD-R burn of an ISO file, (happens to be a slipstreamed XP install for my crapped out laptop, look up boot/bcd error in Vista)

It worked without error, the Verify picked up a few errors, but this is million times better than previous.

Here is the log.

Now for a DVD-R, wish me luck, will post soon, more wine garcon.

Laterz

Didnt really help the DVD burning, at all.

Still got loads of CRC errors.

DVD did finish, is watchable with a few glitches.

This kind of points towards a driver problem.

When I checked the drivers under control panel it never actually changed the driver listed, either when I flashed the drive with liggy 1.03 or when I rolled back to the microsoft driver…
