Could use some help here.About a week ago DVDShrink started running 50 - 100% slower and Roxio started burning at one third speed. Tried system restore (XP Home) - no luck. They still work but at greatly reduced speeds. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.
Have you checked/enabled DMA for your drives? One of them may have slipped into PIO Mode.
Click the link in my signature for details.
just checked - they are all DMA
The Current Transfer Mode for all drives are UDMA Mode x (where x is a number)? “DMA if available” isn’t the important bit.
Nothing says PIO Mode?
Win XP will sometimes indicate " DMA" when in fact the system has defaulted to PIO ( I don’t know if Vista does this).
You may want to consider resetting your DMA regardless.
You have nothing to loose by resetting.
Have you change the brand of disc you are using ?
Some drives just don’t like some brands of disc.
Hope this helps…
thanks to all for the help.
I have tried several different brands of DVD’s
This may have happened on or about the time I burned my 1st dual layere DVD - not exactly sure
Do I reset the drives to DMA at the same screen I checked them at?
Windows can sometimes falsely report that it is dma when it is not (pio can go as fast as dma mode 2 so it thinks its that). In particular I had that problem with nforce 2 motherboards. The quick easy way to check is to download cdspeed and do a burst rate test. Have a burned single layer disk in the drive. If your speed is to slow, check your bios for dma settings. The burst rate test will tell you if there is a hardware based speed problem, regardless of what the cause is.
