Copies stall at Layer break when played

vbimport

I’ve used clone, Full disk, main movie and still, on most DVDs I end up with a DVD that stalls at the layer break when playing, even on diff DVD payers. Using Verbatim DVD+DL disks and DVDFab’s VSO engine. With the target disk size set and DVD+RL.
At the stall, if I fastforward a bit, I can get past the stall and the DVD continues to play then.

I’m writing at the slowest recommended speed (2.4x) for the verbatim DVD+DL disks.

In each case where there’s a prob with the layer break causing a stall when played, the DVDFab log reports that could not place layer break in optimal location.

software: DVDFab Platinum version: 5076–burning_engine: VSO (Set to remove layer break); dvd burner drive: Sony DW-18 (made by Lite-on); Region Code 1 (USA)

Any thoughts?

sh

Please post a burn log from one of these.

#3

Okay. I might have to do another burn in case the logs haven’t been saved. thanks.

Btw, all the disks are reported as successfully burned with a verification run after burning.

What happens when you play the originals DVD ??? What firmware are you using Sony or Liteon on the liteon burner?

#5

Original DVDs work fine, it’s only the copies that stall at the layer break. Firmware is whatever Sony put in it; I haven’t tried to update it. Sorry, I don’t have it at work to check; I can look it up when I get home. I just happen to know that this rather widely used model of Sony drive is really a lite-on. I contacted DVDFAb about it and they, basically, said, keep trying diff brands of disk until something worked. It was as if the software folks were blaming the hardware folks.

If it in fact at the layer break, you can open"common settings" >> “protection” and at the bottom remove the check mark for “Remove Layer Break” then DVDFab will preserve the Original layer break location. see if that works for you.
Have a nice day :flower:

#7

Thanks, I’ve tried that without a change in results. Also, the problem occurs with Clone, which ignores the Remove Layer Break Setting and automatically preserves the original setting (or so says DVDfab).

Also have tried Taiyo Yuden disks.

Hi Shieber,

You can try using Image Burn for the burning engine instead of VSO. I have only burned a few DL’s but they were flawless.

Re: clone mode, Fengtao is absolutely correct…the LB will be preserved regardless of settings. The LB should not be a problem in Clone mode or Full Disc mode.

Not sure what you mean about the TY’s…what LB?
I think the only DL TY’s marketed were TYG11…they were -R DL, were a miserable failure and as such, didn’t have any firmware support anyway.

If you could post a few burn logs as signals requested, it’ll help a great deal…they’re still on your hdd unless you deleted them.

The default location is:

Sorry about stating TY’s. I was looking for such when shopping around for good DL disks but ended up getting Verbies. It was a couple of months ago and I misremembered.

Hi again shieber,

Have you had previous success burning DL’s with this burner and firmware?
Your firmware is way obsolete and goes back to '04…ancient times re: burning DL media.

Personally, I’d cross flash this burner to a LiteOn.
I’m at work right now and pressed for time, but it should be pretty straightforward. If you need help, visit the LiteOn/Sony cdf subforum or maybe someone else will pop in and point you in the right direction

Now and then, one of them works okay. But most don’t. Would it matter to just pic up a DVR-116D? That’s the Vista capable version of the 115D — I can get one of those for about $30.

I don’t see how you could go wrong with this drive for $30.
Newegg has 'em back in stock for $30 …free shipping…

Replace the drive! It barely supports DL burning. Agree with Maineman 100%.

#20

Does the 116d support bit setting or do you have to crossflash? I can’t get crossflash to work. I have 115d.
