Hello, I'm Jacques, the author of ConvertX.
First of all, I want to apologize the group for our arrogant answer 4 posts before.
We have a team at VSO that is dedicated to answer to most of the technical questions in forums, however this team can't have the level of expertise I may have with my hands directly in the source code.
Yesterday, I've been asked about this issue, and because I was busy on something else, I made statement to my team that I didn't double-check, and it appear these statements were false.
So here is the exact behaviour of the burning layer with the media statistic:
Media statistics are sent (if the setting allow this):
* in case of a burn error, just after the last written sector.
* in case of a burn success, just after the completion of the finalization.
So, to be clear, media statistics can't cause the finalization to fail, as it is sent when all write operations are finished.
How it may cause problem:
Media statistics open a new thread to submit information in a non-blocking way. The whole process complete only when this thread has ended. It is possible that a firewall leave this thread in a suspended state so that the burning layer is endlessly waiting for a completion, and do not signal that the burning has finished not matter it really did... I thought I put a 15 second timeout on this request, after checking the code there is no timeout, which is my mistake and will be fixed very soon ...
I want also to say that media statistics are only for the purpose of improving the quality of our burning engine and establishing a chart of the good burners/good media so we can give recommendations based on real world experience. We do not collect information that may identify user in any way.
We do not want to force the users to turn this feature on, it has always beeen possible to turn this off in the software settings. We will add in the next release a page in the installation script to allow user to turn this feature off at installation time.
I wish to thank you all for your patience and your fidelity to VSO.
