Converting DVDs to Microsoft Zune 80

Hello. I’m new here and I’m looking to put my DVD library onto my new Zune 80. I’d like to use open source software to do this. Here’s what I think I know so far:

[li]DVDs are encoded with the MPEG-2 and AC-3 codecs at about 9Mbps with 6-channel audio
[/li][li]Most NA DVDs run at 720x480@29.97 fps with a usual aspect ratio of 1.85
[/li][li]The Zune supports the WMV9 and H.264 video codecs (among others)
[/li][li]The Zune runs at 320x240 (at 60fps?) and has a 4:3 aspect ratio

So what I think I need to do is this:

[li]decode the DVD
[/li][li]re-size the video to 320x240 (which will stretch the original vertically?)
[/li][li]encode the video into WMV format and the audio into WMA 2-channel format
[/li][li]change the frame rate to 30 from 29.97 fps

Do I have all my facts straight? What software do I need for this job?

You might want to look at Xvid4PSP. It can convert to a great many different formats, (though it doesn’t have a preset for your Zune). You can encode to MP4 using the H264 codec. You can adjust video resolution, framerate and audio format fairly easily.

Xvid4PSP will open dvd video folders directly, so that helps matters. Free to download and use.

If you are set on using wmv and wma, this tool won’t work for you though, as it doesn’t encode to those formats.

To get the dvds onto the hard drive you will need a decryption/ripping tool. A free one is DVDFab HD Decrypter. It is still being updated.
