Constant problems with BenQ 1640 - bad drive?

Hi there everyone. This is the first time I’ve posted on this forum, but I’ve been around on the SharkyForums website for awhile.

I’ve been having major problems with my BenQ 1640 for awhile. Constant coasters, successful burns not going at full speed, and a major headache altogether. I made a post to the SharkyForums website regarding it, but some of those members suggested I post over here to see if I could get more specific answers or recommendations for a new drive.

Welcome to CDF’s

Is UDMA-2 working in the device manager? What firmware are you using? Try booting from Windoze disc with it and see if it will.

Welcome to the forum

Providing that the problem is not a damaged drive, it could be a low quality media issue.

What discs are you using? At what speed are you burning? Which firmware is installed on the drive?

 too slow again :stuck_out_tongue:

UDMA: Yes, UDMA 2 - Ultra33 is on.

Firmware is BSRB

Media: I’ve tried a bunch of different kinds. I initially got memorex because it was cheap. Barely any of that worked. Then I got a pack of much better Verbatim (Both DVD+R and DVD+R DL) - These worked better, but still got over 50% coasters. I’ve now used 5/10 Sony DVD+Rs rated at 16x and only 2 of them have burned successfully.

I’ve tried varying speeds anywhere from 4x-16x, but I’ll usually keep it around 8x to be on the safe side. When I enable Test Write in QSuite, everything works fine in Nero. But once it is off, it will usually fail within the first 10-15 seconds of burning or rarely right at the end.

Are these movies or data? Try ImgBurn to build .iso and burn.

Use QSuite to clear the learned media list, downgrade to BSLB and try again. My 1640 had acted up a few weeks ago with MCC03RG20, MCC004 and TYG03, even flashed to a (Sony) 810A (1.0e) and it didn’t help either. Flashed back with BSLB and it has burned those media at its capability again.

Rolling56: Both - It’s been anywhere from a few .avi’s, jpegs, and mp3s to word documents and photos.

KTL - I’ll give that a shot and let you know.

Test Write is use only if you want to simulate data burning, ie not really burning anything to the disc, to see if the result is well.

You can try downgrading to BSLB as suggested but I would recommend the latest firmware for DVD+R DL burning.

I would suggest the following to be perform for troubleshooting:

  1. Next time Nero failed to burn, please copy and paste the log here so our knowledgeable members can analyze what the cause of errors.

  2. In the meantime, download the latest Nero CD-DVD Speed, insert a blank media, choose Create Disc tab, select 8x speed, and press Start. When it’s done, save the image in PNG format by pressing the disc icon on the top right. The create disc function will burn random data onto your media and we can also see how well your drive burn the disc and your system resources by analysing the charts and figures.

  3. Select Quality Scan tab and choose 8x speed and click Start to start scanning PI/PO errors. Save the image and attached both images here.

  4. Post Nero InfoTools log here so we can take a look on your system info.

Still haven’t burned a data disc, but here are the results from the tests I did as per zevia’s suggestions. Edit: (With newly reverted BSLB firmware)

Ugh, I just tried making an .iso with ImgBurn and then burning it with ImgBurn. Again, a no-go. Here’s the error I got:

What are your machine specs?

-AMD X2 3800+
-1gb RAM
-Sapphire Radeon x800 XL
-XP SP2
-And some other components no more than 2 years old. Do you need any more specifics of those?

No you have a nice fast machine. Do you defrag often and clean the clutter up good? Other than that i don’t know what to tell you. You might try going back to BSRB.

As rolling56 suggested defrag your hard drive. In my experience when getting a error msg like that in ImgBurn it usually can be cured by defraging your hard drive. Did you flash your drive with BQFlasher or with WinDWFlasher? Some have some success by using WinDWFlasher with the cvt files instead of the exe firmwares.

I suspected that he has Via chipset on his motherboard. If so, do not use XP default driver for your IDE controllers. Go to Viaarena.com and download the latest driver for your motherboard and chipset and other things. Try that and reburn

Thanks guys!

It was either the updated IDE driver or the defragging (or both), but it now works. I’ve burned 2 discs with using images in ImgBurn at 4x and 8x. And I just finished burning like I normally do in Nero at 8x. I’m really glad I didn’t have to buy a new drive.

 i knew one of us here could help you :iagree:

I guess I got lucky those last two times

I’m getting ready to do a reformat, so I started the process of backing up a bunch of files. The first DVD I tried to burn I got a session fixation error. Saying Nero could not complete the burn-at-once. This is using BSRB firmware as I was going to use a DVD+R DL eventually. I also changed my IDE driver’s to Nvidia’s most recent nForce4 chipset pack. Here is the log:

Existing drivers:

Registry Keys:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\AllocateCDROMs : 0 (Security Option)

never use the nvidia chipset drivers. use the microsoft ide drivers. unistall the nvidia drivers and let windows install the microsoft drivers. also never use nero burn to burn dual layer dvd media. nero is very buggy. use Imgburn for dvd burning especially for dual layer dvd+r media.

I’ll try ImgBurn again, but then again:
