well, the light on the box thing stays on and the monitor light stays on but it sounds like the computer turns off and the monitor shows nothing.any key i push doesnt get it back on

i got windows xp home edition

Yo-

You may want to look into how powerful your power supply is - may be shutting down for want of needed power-

Also check your CPU heat - sometimes XP will shut down to prevent your CPU from overheating-

Mike

mobo battery?

does the computer shut off in the middle of using it, or after you have left it alone for a period of time?

shuts down when im using it and when i dont.it picks randomly when it wants to piss me off
im using a powerbar , sometimes 2 of them so ill mess around with that and see if it helps

what kind of processor u got and how many watt power supply. I too had this problem awhile back, after i did some mods on my computer but i solved it after getting a bigger power supply.

hewlett-packard pavillion intel®celeron®cpu 1.70 ghz 1.69ghz 376 mb of ram

if that isnt my processor let me know how to find out

i have no idea what watt supply

yes thats ur processor, have u made any new hardware changes to your computer that would require more output of energy from your power supply?

@ cheech79,

There are numerous computer hardware components that could cause your problem. Sometimes it is difficult and time consuming to troubleshoot the problem.

There is a software utility program called PassMark BurnIn Test (http://www.passmark.com/products/bit.htm) that tests all your hardware components to ensure that they are working properly. It will test your hardware components and provide a status report and tells you what if any hardware is suspect.

I have used this in the past to troubleshoot a similar problem in one of my computers and PassMark BurnIn Test reveled a suspect hardware component. I change the suspect component and haven’t had any problems since with computer.

Always Remember, Start> Settings> Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Event Viewer. Check System and Application logs for those nasty Red Crosses.

i got a bunch of red crosses and some yellow exclamation points
im trying http://www.passmark.com/products/bit.htm now

the test said FAIL
disk a: not enough free disk space
not really sure what that means
everything else had no errors
i had to put a floppy disk in and i think there was some stuff on the disk so maybe thats why it failed

@ cheech79,

Perchance could you inform Forum Members exactly what had a bunch of red crosses and some yellow exclamation points.

Concerning PassMark BurnIn Test. Suggest insetting a clean formatted floppy disk in your A: drive and the running the PassMark BurnIn Test again.

Best Regards,
bjkg

Then you got a bunch 'o problems. Double click the said red crosses and post in the error’s.

He is Making reference to those marvel’s called event logs.

Faulting application vlc.exe, version 0.8.2.0, faulting module vlc.exe, version 0.8.2.0, fault address 0x00343fb7

Do you still use Zone Alarm and VLC? Do the Crashes roughtly coincide with the Event Logs times?

Hi It CD Cracker again

I just find out that there is a new virus in the computer world that is design to restart the computer at ramdom

I think it would be a good idea to download (if you don’t already have it get AVG) from the internetand run it

Good luck

i dont use zonealarm anymore
vlc ya i do

Wow! I guess a reformat would narrow down your problem if you can not do a good disk clean.

I had this problem, sounds like you’ve got a version of the Sasser virus.

Install this windows update: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-011.mspx

then update your virus definiteions and run a virus scan.

You may need to use this virus removal tool: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sasser.removal.tool.html
