Compressing the Dynamic Range of Audio CD

I am running Windows XP SP2. I have Nero 6.x installed, but can update to Nero 7.x if needed.

I have one particular audio CD that has an exceptional dynamic range. The softer passages are inaudible when played in my car. I want to copy the CD with dynamic compression so as to lift the softer passages into the audible range (against the background noise of traffic, air-conditioning, etc.) Is there some Windows utility (preferably freeware) I can use to compress the dynamic range?

If this question has been asked and answered previously in this Forum, could you please direct me to that thread.

Thanks.

Rip it as .WAV, open it in Audacity, tweak away, save as .WAV, burn CD. There are numerous compression and limiting options available, and Audacity is free.
