Compress files captured from camera

Hi guys,

I have some files i extracted from a camera using Pinnacle Studio 8. The files were saved as .avi files at 1024kbps and 16bit PCM audio. They are somewhat huge and i would like to recompress them using another codec that will save me some space. Dont mind losing on some quality as long as the size is reduced significantly.

I have tried Virtual Dub but get this error:

Couldn’t locate decompressor for format ‘dvsd’ (unknown).
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to
decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media
Player, are not suitable. Only ‘Direct stream copy’ is available for this

Any other software i can use, if necessary?

You can find a few links to decoders here:
I have no idea if any supports VFW but I guess that Mainconcept’s does.
If you only have a DirectShow filter then you should be to use Avisynth for frameserving it into VDubMod.

I have used the Mainconcept’s dvsd codec and was able to open the files with VirtualDub. I had found this before but since its shareware i was trying to avoid it somehow.

Thanx DiiZzY for helping out

Glad to help, here’s a bit more info about the avisynth solution:
I might as well add that I have no experience using this combo so I don’t know how reliable it is.
