Completely unreadable Verbatim disk after a few months

Finally ran into a completely deteriorated Verbatim disk. I burned a copy of a dvd video onto a disk, then a few months later took it with me to my brother’s house to watch. What a disaster. This disk will not play, will not open and freezes every computer I put it in. Windows Explorer just hangs trying to open it.

I burned a second disk using the same source on my hard drive and it plays normally. Same process for burning also, using ImgBurn and 8x burning speed. This is a 16x +R, MCC 004 disk, made in Taiwan by CMC.

There are no scratches, no outward signs of deterioration, no problems in the dye (at least to the naked eye).

ISOBuster cannot find the disk in the drive, and works endlessly trying to read it. It won’t even shut down without removing the disk from the drive.

Any idea on what is going on? Other than “its dead Jim”.

Kerry, I have found if the get to hot for to long this happens to me. I leave them in the truck,not in direct sun, and if they are in there a week or so they refuse to play. In the summer of course not winter…ha ha

Could just be one of those oddities…I’ve had the odd Verbie disc either refuse to burn, or not last long. Doesn’t happen often enough to be worried about it, but I guess occasionally there’s one or two discs that’ll slip past the QC.

Looks like you’ve tried all the options I can think of to read it - different drives/computers, ISOBuster etc. Have you tried ISO Puzzle as well - preferably on a tolerant drive - Litey, Samsung etc? Worth a last shot. :slight_smile:

Obviously you have the original source disc anyway, but I’d want to try every last option 'cos it would bug me otherwise LOL :bigsmile:

I’ve never had a Verbatim disc go bad other than some well used -RWs .
Those are ones I used to record & time shift TV shows .
I’ve wondered if this sometimes happens if one gets left in a DVD player for several days & the players internal temp gets to a disc.
I sounds like the drive is having trouble with this disc too. Since ISOBuster is having a problem with it.

If you’re just wanting to see if anything is left on it you might try h2cdimage . A good tool to have if you don’t already have it.

I also have a program " UDF VERIFICATION SOFTWARE Copyright © KONINKLIJKE PHILIPS ELECTRONICS N.V. " . I don’t think it is still available .
It will just give information about the data on a disc but doesn’t recover any data.

It happened to me that a single Verbatim Pastel (i.e. a genuine TY disc) was unreadable after some time, but it was an isolated case. Luckily it never happened to me with other verbatim discs.

Sometimes it happens that a disc contains errors at verification few minutes after the burn, but again it is a very rare event.

My guess is that that specific disc was faulty, or you got a bad batch of media.

Maybe the disc is slightly warped. I’m sure that you don’t use sticky labels, but some times to extract a disc from a case can require some effort (it happened to me) and I wonder if this can damage the disc :eek:

Thanks for the replies. Not a case where I absolutely have to recover anything from this disk, so its headed for the garbage can. Appreciate the suggestions on software though.

But it goes to show that even if you are careful, follow recommended burning procedures and store a disk properly, you can still wind up with a coaster.

Many people in Italian forum are heavily complaining about quality drop in most recent production batches even from quality producers like TY and Verbatim (some of these people are really picky however :doh:)

Actually I agree that recently produced media have not the same quality of discs produced 2-3 years ago :frowning:

I wonder if we must expects more quality drop in future simply because producers are assuming that optical media market will be de facto dead soon :eek:
