Communication failure dw-q28a

I can’t succesfully burn DVDs using Nero, despite numerous attempts. Here are my details:

Ahead Nero v6.00
Sony dw-q28a drive
Windows XP
DVD +R discs and also DVD +RW
writing at 4x speed
I have DMA if available set on my IDE settings

The problem is communication failure. This used to work, so maybe it’s a software compatibility issue? I also have DVD shrink installed. I have also tried burning DVDs through Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 and this also fails. I’d be really grateful for any suggestions on further troubleshooting I can do.

many thanks in advance

Hi,

Outdated. Really. Get the update to latest 6.6.1.4 from www.nero.com

I have DMA if available set on my IDE settings

And what is the active DMA mode?

The problem is communication failure.
Then try this:

 • replace the IDE cable by an 80wired ribbon cable
 • remove (or disconnect) your old LG CD writer as this doesn’t support UDMA modes.

Michael

Hi Michael, thanks for your reply

DMA is set to: PIO Mode. Can you please give me a bit more info as to the cable - wondering what to look for when searching an online store.
thanks
Mike

Hi,

You’re welcome:)

DMA is set to: PIO Mode.
This is bad. I wonder, why Nero indicated “DMA=on” Or do I just need a new pair of glasses
EDIT: Just saw, that Nero reported your HDD as PIO. This is even worse, as your overall system performance is very poor then. Please read the sticky post about DMA in this section.

Can you please give me a bit more info as to the cable - wondering what to look for when searching an online store.
There is nothing special, the wires are finer, and the connectors are colored in black, blue and grey.
UDMA-4 cable (this is what you need) http://www.reichelt.de/artikeldruck.html?ARTIKEL=AK%20671-100
Old UDMA-2 cable: http://www.reichelt.de/artikeldruck.html?ARTIKEL=AK%20671
The cable should be 45 cm in length. Not longer, not shorter.

It is cheaper to buy them locally as you have to consider shipping costs, that are much higher than the price for the article.

Michael

Sidenote: That Quantum Fireball HDD was one of the slower ones, when it hit the market 6 years ago. As its minimum transfer rate is ony 11 MB/s, you won’t be able to write data from that disc faster than 8x. Maybe it’s a good thing to remove that drive and putting it into an USB case or similar. Review of that drive: http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200006/20000626QML30000LC-A_1.html

Thanks for the cable advice - I just went into a PC World (I’m over in the UK), and the guy pretended he knew what I wanted. He showed me something that I reckon wasn’t even close - may have to resort to online stores as local shops are rubbish.

As for the DMA thing, you’re right, my system performance is terrible. :o It’s an old computer and I generally just use my laptop - however I need it for burning DVDs. So really want to resolve this one, I read the sticky post about DMAs but think it just tells you how to set it to “DMA if available” or am I reading the wrong post?

also, I don’t know if this is relevant, but when I load a blank DVD into the drive, My Computer shows the drive as a “CD Drive” - is that normal?! So confused…!

You were probably shown a rounded cable, which normally is 80-wire, but they cost more than the standard ribbon cables. The advantage of rounded is they allow for better airflow and cooling in your PC case.

Right below “DMA if available” you should see “Ultra DMA Mode X” for both hard drives on the Primary IDE Channel and also for the Sony (and maybe the LG) on the Secondary IDE Channel. If that’s not the case, then “Uninstall” the IDE Channel(s) and reboot the PC (see last paragraph in that DMA tutorial).

I think you can update your Nero to version 6.3.1.25 only. Also update the Sony’s firmware to KYS4.

The thing about the “CD Drive” is normal. XP only knows about burning to CD’s not DVD’s. Don’t pay attention to it.

I was but it also had no mention of udma or 80 wired. However it was an ultra ata cable, which having looked into it more reckon is the right thing after all :o

I learned yesterday that Dell has a habit of automatically disabling DMA on the slave HDD, and sure enough when I checked my BIOS it was off. So have now re-enabled this, and having restarted my machine I now have DMA Mode 4 showing for IDE 1 and DMA Mode 5 for IDE 2. Sound good?

I think you can update your Nero to version 6.3.1.25 only. Also update the Sony’s firmware to KYS4.

Thanks for that firmware, will update it. Question about Nero - are you saying I shouldn’t update to version 7?

Will purchase the cable today, and let you know how it goes. Thanks the both of you for your help, really is awesome

 • Ultra ATA 66/100 cable is correct, but an 80-wire flat ribbon will be just as good (and cheaper) for your old PC.
 • Sounds good for the hard disks. Your C-Drive is a bit old, but UDMA4 should work OK.
 • Nero 7 will cost money, the update to 6.3 is free.

Have yet to buy the cable, but thought I’d try another burn having made some changes. So now I’m running Nero version 7 (decided to splash out!), my drives seem to be operating in UDMA mode and I’ve updated my firmware. The new error is DMA-driver error, CRC error, full log below. Is this to do with the cable, or something more sinister?!

I should also point out that My Secondary IDE, Device 1, is running in Multi-Word DMA Mode 2 now - is that bad?!

Too much money?

my drives seem to be operating in UDMA mode and I’ve updated my firmware. The new error is DMA-driver error, CRC error, full log below. Is this to do with the cable, or something more sinister?!
This might indeed due to a bad cable.

I should also point out that My Secondary IDE, Device 1, is running in Multi-Word DMA Mode 2 now - is that bad?!
Your old LG drive is not capable to run in any UDMA mode. MWDMA 2 is the fastest one for that. This is the reason, I suggested to disconnect the drive temporarily.
