Hi guys, thanks for all your advice.
I am short of cash, but the difference between separates and combo is negligible, but I was wondering about IDE channels. I have a UDMA100 hard drive, and if I had a combo it would go as master on the secondary IDE channel. If I have separates, what is the best way to connect them to the IDE channels? Bare in mind that I can't afford to buy a separate PCI IDE/RAID card or whatever :o(
On the subject of separates, the 166S and 52327S from LiteOn aren't available in the UK yet (166S is, just, but is not cheap enough). Is the 165 any good? Better than a Toshiba 1712? What about Pioneer, Sony, Aopen, any other DVD drives? I have noticed that the general concensus leans towards LiteOn and Toshiba drives.
Also, I'm thinking that the best CD-RW drives are LiteOn, LG, Asus and Sony, right? An others?
Anyone know of anywhere where they do a comparison review of the latet Combo drives? (I'm asking a lot of Qs now I know, sorry).
Basically, any combination of drives I have must be able to beat the latest Securom and safedisc protections (can this be done in one combination of drives?), play DVDs (duh!), be good w scratched CDs/DVDs, be able to rip audio, but I'm not terribly bothered about the highest quality, more about whether they can read protected audio discs.
