1. I was saying that codecs are used to encode and to decode. that some apps have their own e.hg. VLC player, ant that others e.g. Zoom player use 3rd party ones.
that it is not clear what dvdfab uses but I strongly suspect it has its’ own ENCODERS so rips will dot depent on what 3rd party studff is installed.
playback depends on what format & what player you use. Zoom player has a facility to check codecs and advise you when an update is available.
NB the term CODEC is short for enCODe DECode - consult wikipedia.
So if you e.g. buy divx pro you get both an encoder and a decoder.
ripping from DVD to AVI , WMV, H264 etc requires an encoder, playback requires a decoder. BUrning is a separate issue & irrelevant to this discussion.
You are right about the preview window I think, in that installing different codecs affects what is used for preview playback, but I think you’ll find that fab has it’s own internal one which it will use if the system offers nothing better. once you have more than 1 codec installed they are assigned proiroties by the OS and usually the highest priory one is used, unless the app forces the use of a different one.
Thanks for defending yourself, but if you’ll note my post, I’m using as a quote the post by GregiBoy - not yours, and my comments are aimed at him.
