Codec problem? "dolphin" sounds

I have downloaded an AVI file. The video plays fine in MediaPlayer and other software, such as TPMGEnc Express. However, the sound is very wrong. It comes through as “dolphin” squeeks only. Sounds a bit like it was recorded at one bit rate but is playing back at another. Or perhaps the wrong codec.

Gspot says the video codec is S-Mpeg 4 Version 3 - it is playing fine. Gspot says the audio codec is “0x0055(MP3) ID’d as MPEG-2 Layer 3”, “Bitrate” is "56 kb/s (28/ch, stereo) CBR " and “Fs” is “24000 Hz”

Gspot says I have two compatible audio codecs installed - “Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (advanced)” and “MPEG Layer-3 Decoder”\

Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?

The MPEG 1.0 Layer 3 decoder is universal; with it you can decode any audio stream which uses that layer.

Try playing some music (with Winamp for example) other than the one on the AVI file. If it doesn’t play correctly, you could have a problem in your sound card that makes it not decode/play audio streams the right way; if all is ok then sounds like your AVI file has a poor quality audio.

it definitely has poor quality audio either way, with 56 kbps for the stream @ 24000 hz
