Hello All, Firstly, thank you for all the advice provided here. It's kept me busy for weeks, not sure if i've learned anything :D...think i've got more confused  It's bad and sad; i now wake up in the night muttering nonsensical-tech.
Seriously, thank you, we have grasped the basics about stuff here so v.grateful. Still not how to resolve our problem.
It began with our dvdr giving up and we got ourselves an rdr-hxd970. I never had the opportunity to play discs burned from pc to the old dvdr as pc was still boxed from recent move, so can't verify whether they would've played or not.
After we read sony manual a few times, we tried (?simple?) task of burning a dvd of our images and v.short avi's to try them out in the sony. Never once has the sony recognised them despite we have quite a collection of blank discs ranging from dvd-/+r to dvd+rw's and from verbatim, maxell, hewlitt-packard and tesco. As an experiment, i scarted the sony to another dvd player and played the burned disc in the dvd-player. that worked but was it necessary? What am I doing wrong? I would like to know as the dvd player will only play jpg's anyway, it's just a basic. It would be good to play a burned disc into the sony without a lot of head-scratching, swearing + rows!
As an extra bit of real-sad (that will give all experts tears) i must admit to never being able to understand the mere basics of burning. We use nero 7 and that never worked properly until we had to pay extra to someone to come out and fix it so it recognised the code.
We're still not sure whether the sony is at fault or our pc; except to say the discs will play quite happily in the p.c. and (providing it's jpg's, of course) also on the basic dvd player. Having said that; the sony performs as it should so am in doubts as to whether the fault lies with it's operators and not the machine. (Yep! we also think it's the operators! BUT-conversely, howcome we get 100% of connections and operations right?)
NB: Entirely unrelated to the above problem; in registering with cdfreaks, the GMT refused to submit! Tried 3 times and each occasion it reminded that a timeline should be entered. Think we plumped for Canadian in the end:sad:
