I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop, and I am having problems with my NEC DVD + RW-ND 6100A. It does not respond and the system reflects a code 39 error, which might possibly mean it is corrupted or needs a firmware update. Unfortunately, I can not seem to find an update for it. Can anyone help?

Hi Coach, welcome to the forum

You need to delete your upper and lower filters from the Registry.

If you have XP, follow the instructions on this page
If you have Vista, use the instructions here

I’d advise to make a System Restore Point, or backup your Registry first, if you’re not familiar with messing with it.

Thank you so much! Everything is now back up and working. Is it necessary to still update the firmware? Are you familar with Driver Detective as a possible resource?

If it’s burning OK, I’d keep the firmware as it is

But if, in future, you come across a new media that doesn’t burn, then it’s time to update

The error message for Code 39 is a bit misleading - drivers come with the OS, and the problem has nothing to do with firmware.
