CloneDVD: Won't fit on disc?

vbimport

#1

Copied a DVD “From Paris With Love” using AnyDvd and CloneDvd…all settings as usual…so DL to a 4.7GB SL (Verbatim etc)

but got a message that it wouldn´t fit on the disc. Never had this happen before. The Video TS folder is 4.36GB

Weird…any ideas why this won´t fit?
Can I delete any of the sub-files without screwing up the playback to make the package a bit smaller?
Or compress it further with maybe DVDShrink or edit it Nero?

#2

A bad media glitch or it wasn’t set to sl but remained on dl setting? Without seeing each screen shot that you went from beginning to end it is hard to know what might be going on. I never had any problem with Anydvd HD and CloneDVD going from DL to SL media of any brand without problem…

Don’t forget also that in general a lot of DVD processing software measures disc capacity in GiB (gibibytes) whereas disc manufacturers like to use GB since it sounds better so the maximum capacity of 4.7GB is equivalent to 4.37GiB.

It’s a bit strange that CloneDVD hasn’t compressed that fully enough but things like that can happen in rare instances due to encoder saturation.

I don’t actually use CloneDVD so I can only really advise in general terms.

Are there settings in CloneDVD that allow you to specify the default output size?

If so change it to 4440MB.

Recompressing will work but is not recommended for quality reasons.

There are other ways of getting this to fit without recompressing and I can recommend options but not in this sub-forum.

If you’d like me to move this thread so we can discuss this further though just ask.

Yes, you can remove all undesired stuff like foreign languages (mostly DTS ones that can consume a lot of disc space and are pretty useless if you don’t have a dedicated audio system).

Usually subtitles use very few space, so there will be no difference if you keep or remove them.

Another thing you can do is remove everything but the main movie if you are not interested in menus or in extra contents.

I suggest to not use both software to do a compression. Results can be disappointing because compression algorithms are different.

If you want to keep the movie only, I suggest to use DVD Shrink (it has a more intuitive interface for this in my opinion). If you want keep menus and extra contents, then I suggest to use clonedvd, because is more updated.

Actually, DVD Shrink is a bit more flexible if you want to keep also extra contents and menus, because you can set manually the amount of compression to each file. in this way, you can apply a higher amount of compression to menus and to trailers, so there will be more space left on the disc and a lesser compression will be needed for the main movie (that should be the most important part of the disc )

Finally, there is another alternative: with cloneDVD you can also split the movie into two discs keeping all menus and extra contents. I never did this, but I know for sure that is possible. Maybe Kerry56 or Alan1476 can say you more in detail how to do this

I would give AnyDvd and CloneDvd another try. This time make sure DVD-5 is selected.
I think it was maybe a glitch.I usually get 4.35 GB with AnyDvd and CloneDvd for a SL compression size.
If this doesn’t work you could try DVD Rebuilder on this too large rip.

Looks like it’s already time to move this thread then.

Deano can you answer a few questions re this disc.

Are there any trailers, intros, warnings etc that you could do without?

Also are there motion menus?

Depending on the percentage of compression CloneDvd says it will take to transcode to a SL . If it is more compression than I want I rip with CloneDvd DVD +/- R DL then encode with DVD Rebuilder to the SL size. So for me DVD Rebuilder is part of the AnyDvd and CloneDvd process it is just not from slysoft/elaborate bytes .

#8

I think there are a few extras, but not really anything large (I´ll have to have another look when I get home as I´m at my daughter´s house for the weekend). I want to be a bit careful as I would like to keep both English and German audio tracks available.

And CloneDvd is definitely set to SL…I checked that immediately, and retried anyway…still the same result. Was wondering if it is a new or peculiar protection.

As I don´t have DvdRebuilder currently installed - I might have a look at what can be deleted and have a try using Nero Vision…and deleting something I don´t need.

Here´s a screenshot of the file list

That’s just a list of the files.

You can’t just delete one of them you have to edit the structure of the DVD to remove the content.

You could reprocess but we can go one better than that.

Open the DVD in PgcEdit.

For starters we can try the ‘remove useless stuff’ function and see if this removes any uncalled material.

Go to the DVD menu, and select it from there.

Then go to the Tools menu and run FixVTS on the entire DVD.

Delete the PgcEdit backup folders from the DVD folder then look at the total size and see if it’s reduced enough.

If not then select a small PGC in the left hand window (the ones with the duration beside them are the playable ones) then right click and preview the PGC.

Check them all then select the one(s) you don’t mind losing, right click and kill PGC playback. Accept all the dialogue boxes recommended options.

As above delete the backup files and run FixVTS and see how much you’ve reduced the folder size.

You can therefore customise the DVD and produce a version containing exactly what you want. I normally do all this before compression as it will either make compression unnecessary or maximise the quality when compressed.

There’s another program that’s very useful that you may want to try called MenuShrink and this converts motion menus to stills of your choice.

Depending on the menus you can sometimes recover enough space using this program to avoid compression or in your case to get it to fit.

You can also use PgcEdit to remove the menu buttons for specfic extras removed but that’s maybe a step too far at this stage as I don’t know if you want to go down that route or not. It’s a fantastic program though and highly recommended.

If you’ve any queries ask away as I’m more than glad to assist.

Importing all files into Nero Vision…it reported the total was 4.01GB…so attempted to burn to a TDK disc (which always worked before).
Lots of good sounding action as I went to bed (from the lappy I mean!)
Got up to find BURN FAILED :Z

The log file is too big to attach, so some parts are here below…maybe someone can spot what the problem is…seems to be related to the cache…
…You can’t just delete one of them you have to edit the structure of the DVD to remove the content…
…we can try the ‘remove useless stuff’ function and see if this removes any uncalled material…
… then look at the total size and see if it’s reduced enough…
…Depending on the menus you can sometimes recover enough space using this program to avoid compression or in your case to get it to fit.

…If you’ve any queries ask away as I’m more than glad to assist.

Thank you kind sir.
I´m really not sure it´s a size problem, although CloneDvd reported that 4.36GB was too big, since importing all the files into Nero Express showed a total of only 4.01GB. Never-the-less, I´m curious to get to the bottom of this as I´ve never had a failure like this before.
BTW…I am able to click on the TS_BUP file and the complete video plays on my laptop including fully funtional menu features

My pleasure.

Most of the other errors seem to stem from that first one with VOB 13.

There’s a possibility that this is a bad or corrupt rip.

When you’re importing it into Nero Express it’s perhaps excluding corrupt material which would explain the difference in size.

I see there’s a power calibration error there as well though which normally suggests media related problems or a writer that’s potentially on the way out.

It could just be a weird side effect of the other errors though.

I shall investigate further tomorrow…when I get home after work & training, and before I get a beer
If it continues or repeats…would it be worth sending the CloneDvd log file to Slysoft?

#14

Lesson learned: Stay away from nero stuff :stuck_out_tongue:

Try this other thing: load files with DVD Shrink, remove all unwanted features, and save files without compression. Do not use the re-author mode for this, or menus will be removed.

Then load the saved files in cloneDVD, and run any compression if needed
If it continues or repeats…would it be worth sending the CloneDvd log file to Slysoft?
There’s no harm in trying that and it may well be interesting to hear what they say.

#16

@ deanimator , I assume you have the latest version of CloneDVD. You might try downloading a fresh copy .Then uninstalling the old one just in case it is corrupt.
I’ve ripped a lot of movies with AnyDVD & CloneDVD & I’ve never had it create a VIDEO_TS folder larger than 4.35 GB for a DVD-5 rip.
I don’t know why it added the .01 GB but I think that is the problem.
I would be interested in knowing the cause .
Have you tried doing a burn with ImgBurn & see what its log reports?

#17

Next opportunity to investigate completely will be in about 24 hours, so I´ll report back for sure.

Everything is up-to-date, and this is my first example of a problem…I was very surprised when it happened…but we´ll solve it.

A big thanks to all for the support here

#18

You’re better off going straight to the CloneDVD thread on the Slysoft website. Upload the logfiles and they’ll figure it out. Just for the record, I had no problems with From Paris With Love, movie only, one subtitle and 6 channel audio.

#19

Problem solved

It was easy:
DON´T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF BAD MEDIA TO SCREW WITH THE LIMITED TIME YOU HAVE BEFORE YOU MEET YER MAKER!!!

Yep…the first two burns were on what appears to be not-optimal media. The burn I have just made…worked perfectly from the original titles which I kept on the lappy from the first rip!!! This time I burned using the usual parameters to my Benq but to one of my few remaining 4x MIJ Verbatims…no problem at all.

Thanks for all the wild and cool and kind suggestions

Excellent, glad you got sorted.

That power calibration error mostly relates to bad media although as I said earlier it can also occur when your drive is on the way out.
